Is the freezing line not supposed to shift south and east as this plays out? Just curious if this could impact more of LA than what is shown in those graphics

Seems there were several issues, a big one relating to them using solar panels to power the natural gas supply mains. Seems after a week of snow and ice the batteries were no longer charged and WTH the valves couldn't be opened or closed. Cool right?

Its a good thing you plan to drink a lot on this trip. Alcohol will be helpful.

The precip should be long gone by the time temps dip below freezing across the majority of LA.

18z HRRR is running now. For those who don't know, that's one of the long runs.

Cant think of a place you need to get to without crossing over a bridge or elevated highway.

I dont have to get out during that time just worried about power.

Pretty much. Seems like Thursday is gonna be rough but after that will be fine just cold. I’m just worried about power outages. But I also have no frame of reference for this type of weather.

So just how fricked are we here in Louisville? Are we talking 2009 Ice Storm kind of fricked?

Not asking for a friend.

So I've been sick and not bothered watching the weather but I'm in the Memphis metro area and I thought at first they were downplaying this. Are we going to get more freezing rain/ice then what they're saying?

Edit: I think the NWS winter storm watch this morning called for one tenth to four tenths of an inch possible.

If you're in an area where ice will be bad enough to knock out power, that's usually a multi-day issue. Especially if it stays cold afterward or more precip follows.

We will see shortly if HRRR backs off of that 12z run, and get a farther out look than we had on that run. The end of the 12z run was setting up pretty bad for the Memphis/Eastern side of this storm.

Expecting 12”-18” here in Columbia, they just now canceled elementary-university for the rest of the week. I’ll take 18” of snow everyday of the week over a 1/4”-1/2” of ice/freezing rain. Was just in Des Moines 2 weekends ago for a blizzard

Let’s see how well them power plants baws installed new heat tracing. As long as it’s not a repeat of last year…

And where they had power available, the grid couldn’t support all of electric heaters (homes without gas) all turning on and overloading the system.

DR Horton and DSLD are known to save money by not including gas in some of their new neighborhoods.

We have run into that problem in a few locations in Louisiana where we had to upgrade OH lines and overcurrent protection.

There's a pretty steep temperature gradient with this front. At midnight Thursday it is 37° in Memphis and 16° in Springfield. Any variation in timing with this front can make all the difference, particularly for Memphis.
