I could move somewhere with better schools, but then I would have to give up being close to friends and family. And the school tuition isn't killing me. The biggest drawback to me here is the shite climate, and topography, but that still doesn't really offset being close to friends and family.

I'm fortunate that I can work from home and that my wife has an opportunity here that is as good or better than she would have in other areas. I understand for a lot of people there aren't career opportunities here that can be had elsewhere.

If you're in a situation where your income is proportionally the same as it would be in higher COL areas, a place like Lafayette really isn't a bad place to live and raise a family.

For example, I don't see what living in Texas would offer to offset the benefits that I have living here.

this is the situation i am in pretty much exactly. we were moving to houston area but after my FIL died my wife switched careers and we cant make what we do in Texas so we stay as it provides us a better standard of living and i can chose to send to public or private(we choose private) and the tution doesnt really hurt me and we are close to family and friends.

IMO laffy is best place on the LA coast. doesnt get hit by hurricanes directly, or atleast never really has, plenty of upper middle class surburbs and tons of great restruants and entertainment options for families.

but i totally understand why people leave for sure.

Count me in as "not me"

We moved to Boise 5 years ago in an old vehicle with $1500.

Best decision we have ever made.

i guess going to lsu and having a couple engineering major friends made me think 75-90ish was a normal starting salary and mid career would be more like 110-120

I’ve always heard North shore is good but do they have a strong community feel and support their local businesses this way? Or do the Joneses just say frick it and go to Chili’s?

Mandeville has plenty of local businesses and community stuff going on. There is a Chili's but I've never seen many cars there.

Have to imagine Madisonville is similar- just less stuff.
Covington has more of the generic type businesses but also plenty of local.

Slidell is a different creature altogether.

it is in the south la and houston market. hell mid career is actually a good bit higher with 120 being lower end after 10-12 years or so.

for some reason the rest of the country is way lower. Civils is even worse.

thats why so many of us stay here or houston area...we cant make what we do elsewhere and its low COL only helps.

for example....me as a civil...if i got out of the plants and lets say high tailed it to NW ark...the top 10% salary for a PE designated as a CEII is 96k.

thats not a bad salary for a engineer 1 with 3 years expierence in the plants. its a terrible salary for someone that is a II, has a PE and 10+ years in the plants, terrible much less top 10%.

mechanical is listed pretty much exactly the same on salary.com

thats why i laugh when people ask me why i dont move. I could make more in houston but my wife would make less. cost of living would prolly be about the same and would not be by family. property tax would cancel any gain from going public school and my kids private is better than almost all the publics in the suburbs we would want to live in....so its really no reason to leave.

but i also realize me and my industry are completly different than 90% of those in LA and im in a different position that 90% of those in south LA.
