I just looked, and they have some studs on that page. Super impressed to see those killed on a WMA. Not sure, but I am guessing those wma's aren't just wide open for public hunting?

All the WMA's are open for public hunting. Each one has certain dates for certain hunts that are found on the back of each WMA permit map. They'll be dates for deer gun hunts, deer youth, deer primitive weapons, etc on the back of each WMA with their rules/regs. They're not all the same. Cahaba WMA is closest to Hoover so I normally go there but Cahaba didn't have a hunt this weekend so I looked at the next closest which was Hollins. I scouted there Thursday afternoon and shot that buck the next day.

Here's Hollins map/permit - Hollins WMA map/permit

Check out this map showing where they're all located. Rut map/WMA map

Here's the link for all the WMA's, just click on each one to open that WMAs map.

Congrats, but be careful, the buck in the first pic is bordering on being a legal deer in many states. In MS the min is a 10 inch inside spread...that the deer meets, but not by much. A good rule of thumb is don't shoot a buck unless the horns extend beyond the ears (usually 13-15 inches), this will keep you legal. Obviously criteria varies from area to area.

If you do shoot an illegal deer, for goodness sakes don't post pics of it on FB, especially under your real name.

That’s what I’d say if it were my 20th.

Harlan, a couple weeks back we were bemoaning hunting in shorts and flip flops. A poster, I don’t recall who, said he’d killed all his big bucks from 10-2. There’s credence to that timeframe, but not many were interested since it was 85 degrees. Just kind of an inside joke.

Boths pics are of the same deer.

Since reading your post I've searched and searched the innerwebs for a spread measurement rule/law in Alabama and haven't found anything. I saw where that is a requirement in MS. How's a man supposed to tell the width of a spread when a deer is walking broadside to you and you only saw him two minutes earlier and it never looked straight at you? I counted at least 8 points when I saw him and that's all that mattered.

I'm not shooting an illegal deer, not worth the headaches of getting caught.

Greenbean’s comments have absolutely no relevance to your deer or this thread. Congrats on the public land buck.

What does this mean?

A lot of folks kill deer in that time frame.
