The New York Times Co has agreed to acquire subscription sports site The Athletic in a deal valued at around $550 million, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The deal is a major acquisition for the Times, giving it a new pocket of subscription customers to the New York Times, which has set an ambitious goal of reaching 10 million subscribers by 2025. As of Sept 30, the Times reported 8.3 million digital and print subscribers.

Article says that they were hoping for a valuation of $750 million and sold at $550m.

Either NYT got a steal or The Athletic was bleeding and took one of the first reasonable offers they had. Maybe both.

Remember when the NYT had the worst poll in the BCS? It was a sign of things to come

Great more wokeness, Liberalism, and no talk of sports. Cool.

The Athletic was one of the few purely sports sources without woketardness.

Sadly that appears to be coming to an end.

Goddamnit,

Just renewed. I love some articles in The Athletic.

Bummer. The NYT is an absolute rag of a news organization, despite their incredible crossword puzzles. This isn't political for me either, they have just terrible content.

This seems like the typical media-sub ponzi scheme. NYT is just trying to pump up share values.

I don't pay for opinion pieces. I have no need for the.. I don't give a damn what a journalism major has to think about anything, much less sports.

I'm curious how much of the "talent" got equity. I think there were a lot of layoffs a few years ago, so many of them may have been happy just to have a job. But did bigger names like Stewart Mandel get some sweet tech-company style stock option deals?

There is only one source of media. The independent voices sell out.
