All I heard was "money, money, and more money. I wanna make as much money as possible!". Which, ok, he's a kid. But geez, when and where does the "right football fit" come into play?

“Right football fit” doesn’t come into play for some of these kids. Too busy chasing short term NiL money.

Exactly. You start having the mindset that you don’t want players that have making serious money at 18 as a priority, then might as well raise the white flag in trying to recruit on an elite level ever again. It’s only going to get worse.

The problem with Perkins is that he made it clear that is his ONLY priority. There’s nothing wrong with giving kids pay that’s as good or better than Bama or A&M. But we need to be giving it to the right guys.

This is something that the new staff will need to attack from both ends to create a new culture. I think it’s smart to prioritize a certain number of players who will slot right into a new approach, but that can’t be the entire focus. Part of their effort has to be to create and sell a culture and mindset to players that gets them to buy into a process-oriented philosophy because it works and will both make them better and deliver better results.

Bama is the ultimate example of this. They don’t just recruit a chorus of choirboys, but they have created a culture that gets most of their players to buy into a process-oriented team approach because it results in both titles and personal achievement. They are able to take guys who may be all about the money when they step on campus and they get most of them to buy into their culture and philosophy.

I never said we wouldn’t have to. I also said in my first post that I’m sure we’re paying Howard and Campbell, who could have gone elsewhere fishing for a better offer during the coaching transition. Are they not 5 star players? Are they not the kind of guys we should focus on as the back ones of future classes?

Actually campbell and howard are the kind of kids you don't have to pay. They will come to lsu for free.

As LSU as they are, I don’t think that’s true. They all need to be paid something or it will eventually end up breeding resentment. Just like in pro sports, the money offered translates to respect in the eyes of most athletes.

We just saw play out with Boutte yesterday. He wanted to be shown love here at LSU and it happened in the form of an NIL deal.

That’s the first thing I thought of

A five star talent with a zero star attitude all too often does not work out and causes team chemistry/locker room problems…. not to mention higher risk for academic eligibility issues.

Not worth it. Hard pass.

He's at an under armor all star game. Someone he knows is behind the camera making him smile like it's a joke or something. These are 18 year old kids. I went on recruiting trips 40 years ago(not football or hoops) and i didn't know how to act and had no real understanding for any of the process or how important it is for the schools. 18 yr. old kids are just that..kids.

Someone should be advising him to speak of his love for the sport and the money, nil etc. will follow. That's what any coach is looking for.

If only the family could realize NFL>NIL.

I'm sure their thought process is get NIL money now, and NFL money in 3 years. Freshman year doesn't matter that much. Devin White played sparingly his freshman year and didn't really bust out until the bowl game against Louisville.

With the no-sit to transfer rule, guys can take NIL money to sign somewhere and transfer a year later if it doesn't work out. NFL front offices aren't going to care if a guy transferred as long as he can play.

Let's say a guy takes $300k to sign somewhere, then transfers and gets another $100k in his transfer recruitment. Wherever he ends up, he'll still have 2 years to establish himself as a high draft pick.

I'm totally fine if we focus our resources on retaining existing players and getting young guys out of the portal. A huge benefit of getting a sophomore or RS freshman out of the portal is that they'd have to sit a year if they transfer again, so it's unlikely you'll have to play the annual "this guy isn't happy and we gotta keep him" dance.

We may hate the portal now, but I think it's going to end up being a great tool for smart coaches to grab 2 and 3 year players at a discount instead of overpaying for high school players who haven't spent a minute on a college campus. Also, let's not kid ourselves. If a kid goes to A&M or Alabama or some other big school, they're going to get good coaching and be in a good S&C program. It's not like that year is going to be wasted from a development standpoint.

I get the impression Kelly isn't playing around with kids who have their hands out. I feel like those are the type of kids who have been quitting on us for the last 2 years.

Great now we can recruit against Vanderbilt and Tulane!!

Do, these freshman understand that NIL is only beneficial if they playing. Like hen said it’s Austin, there’s plenty of NIL money there he going to use them like they use him. Well one injury or a redshirt season will crush their hopes. No one is explaining this to them kids. They hearing numbers but don’t know the dynamics of the whole setup.

It’s a shame that LSU will likely miss on this well spoken high character prospect.

I was well aware of the tweet and the complete lack of reference to NIL. You are drawing conclusions with absolutely no basis. What about the remainder of the roster with eligibility? Are they also holding LSU hostage or is it just Boutte?
