Do you have a friend that changes jobs…constantly? (Or maybe it’s you?)

I worked with a girl at the start of my career, some 24 years ago. Our company was acquired and we moved across the country. She quit within a few months, and moved back home. I haven’t seen her in person since, but we have been “friends” on social media. I am amazed at her journey.
She has easily held 20 different jobs. Each one starts with a post on social about how amazing it will be, with follow ups. Then the posts stop. She will “re start” her own company every few years. At one point, she worked at Walmart picking groceries. She started a job last year that she raves about, but I just noticed a post that indicates that is done.
This is a professional, not just some French fry cook. And yes, purple hair.
How the hell do you get a job when you can’t show a history of over a year for anything?

Occasionally I'll interview someone that's had like 9 jobs and they are 33 or something and that's a big red flag to me.
I don't necessarily expect employee loyalty to employers in 2021 but that person probably has some issues

I know a guy who is on his 6th job in 2 years. All by his own choosing as he uses the headhunters on LinkedIn to find jobs that pay better where he works.

My brother.

I’m in my 50s and have had exactly two jobs
1. The United States Army (1988-1992)
2. Caterpillar (1992-present)

Same as these people that are always posting about their new relationship then get married after 6 months then you don’t hear anything for a couple years then back with a new relationship and marriage all over again.

Not a friend but I see these people on LinkedIn all the time. Never hold a job more than 9 months. Beyond me why anyone would hire them. It’s obvious they bail as soon as there are any expectations of competence.

I'm wondering how he pulls that off. If you stay in the same industry you're going to get a reputation as a job hopper and nobody will want you. If you aren't doing that in one industry, then you have to convince keep convincing a new employer to teach you the ropes.
The latter seems like it would be even harder. How do you manage to pull offers?

I get resumes all the time with job histories that look like the one you describe. I throw them away. The one time I made an exception based on a “recommendation” from a board member and the woman left after 4 months. All I could do was laugh.

I've had 2 jobs in the past 20 years. I guess you can constantly chase a slightly higher salary but that's never been worth the stability to me.

She asked me for help getting a job at my company once, and I told her “I’d try,” but the reality is there’s no way I’d stick my neck out for someone with her track record.

I’ve worked for the same company since I was in college. I’ve held several positions in the company. January will be my 22 anniversary there.
I have a friend who I’ve known for 7 or so years and he is at least on job 5. I’m not talking about burger flipping jobs. At one point during that time we was an executive at the Southern Company responsible for several power plants.
He is a super smart guy and one of my best friends. We have talked about it before, he said he enjoys the challenge of something new. I’ve always been the opposite. I wish I could be more like that, I have never liked risks.

Friend of mine gets a new job every 2-3 years. Now he’s a web designer making $130k/year before 40.

Well, I started out as a simple warehouse worker, then moved up to the parts counter, then a Product Support Representative over Central Alabama, now I am the Product Manager responsible for running Caterpillar’s undercarriage and ground engaging tool (GET) business (estimated to be approximately $20 million in revenue in 2021) in the Alabama & Florida Panhandle territory.
Yeah, it’s worked out for me.
