Are we seeing the last of the "meaningless" bowl games?

With many big name draft eligible players opting out of bowl games and now apparently entire teams opting out of games, is the bowl game model about to change? I would assume this only speeds up the playoff expansion and could possibly take it up to a 32 team playoff just to keep players and fans interested. The current CFP system has demolished bowl season.

Playoff expansion and make the non-playoff bowls more appealing if possible. Try to hold them alongside other major festivals/events instead of having the bowl itself be the major event.
It is a shame what the non-playoff bowls have become relative to where they were in the BCS-era.

It really is a shame. As much as I like a legitimate winner being crowned through a playoff, bowl season was much more exciting during the BCS era.

Meaningless bowl games do need to go away, screw tradition the transfer portal and NIL aren't tradition and they added that shite to CFB. Why risk your best players getting hurt whether they are going to the draft or risk fuking up their next season in a game that's meaningless at the end of the year.

They did that to themselves. In the BCS era (prior to the playoffs) 14 bowl games were added. 11 more since the start of the CFP era. This is why there are so many meaningless games.
I have no issues with that but I don't pretend it means much nor do I get butthurt if a players who is not returning or injured opts out.

There’s just too many bowl games. Quality over quantity needs to be the mindset. But since they’re funded, I doubt we’ll see them go away.

The worst part of these "meaningless" bows is the fact that we are forced to watch them. We can't do anything else.

I have enjoyed watching the bowls with teams like UAB, Army, UCF. Those teams want to play. Yes teams like Florida, Missouri and other sec teams ain’t worth watching because they think they are too good and players don’t play. So I say ban The SEC and Big 10 from playing in bowls.

No, ESPN needs programming and despite the bitching and moaning people still watch.

Look at the WKU game, the guy broke Burrows record with a bunch of dudes running around just going through the motions. Not taking anything away from the guys achievements during the year but that was a joke of a game. It's like watching the NFL pro bowl

Did I miss something? No teams have “opted out”. They backed out when most of the team caught COVID. Is there another instance I missed?

12 team playoff with 1-4 getting byes. Funnel these to various bowls, and eliminate the remaining bowls as they're irrelevant.

If the bowls continue to get the TV revenue, they will stay alive.
Holiday bowls are a tradition in the US....I bet the liberal leadership in this country is jumping for joy to see college football in chaos. Liberals/progressives do not give a shite about tradition....

A few important punctuation placements probably could've helped me understand your point a little better but are you suggesting that we only have the 2 playoff games and NC game and that's it? Those are the only bowl games that mean anything.

12 team playoff:
-teams 5-12, 4 games
-winners above play 1-4, 4 games
-winners above play, 2 games
-winners above play for NC, 1 game
-11 total games that would bring great interest/viewership
Please share your ideas on which bowls should remain...

Exactly. Might be meaningless but they still mean $$$ for some. From Ross Dellenger:
The Independence Bowl, the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl and the Cricket Celebration Bowl drew better TV ratings than 10 NBA games last week.

Too many bowl games anyway.

Yep!
Collegiate Football is dead. Killed off by greedy NFL owners, a corrupt NCAA, and players more focused on making it in the professional ranks than getting a quality education at a great university.

This is such a tired and stupid argument. So we can’t ever be critical of anything because we aren’t forced to watch? I can’t say it’s lame Clemson plays the Citadel or Alabama plays Mercer because I don’t have to watch?
42 bowl games is too many because it has completely watered down the product. The reason we get so many awful regular season OOC games is a direct result of teams trying to get bowl eligible. Making a bowl used to be an accomplishment now we have mediocre teams that have fired their coach with many key players sitting all btw at an enormous cost to the schools so we can have programming for ESPN
