Live in the St. George area and never owned a gun before. Only want it for possible self defense since BR crime is out of control.
Any recommendations?

Like carry on your person? Or home/vehicle?

Do you not have any friends with guns have you shot guns before?
You need to get some instruction more than just what you will get a a gun counter at academy buying one.
I would say baker range and try a few to see what gun suits you. But either way you need to shoot one a couple hundred rounds at least and learn how to manipulate it before you plan on using it for self defense.

Agree.
Get training from someone who knows what they are doing. Always treat a gun as loaded. Only point at what you plan on shooting. NEVER put your finger on the trigger until it is the moment to shoot.
It is hard to beat a 12 gauge as an all purpose gun. Home protection and hunting. You want a gun to carry or put in your truck; different story. I purchased my handguns based on how they fit my hand. 9mm semi-auto is hard to beat. Any of the big brands are fine. I like Sigs

Is this a nightstand gun or a CC gun?

Buy a handgun like a Glock Style.
You want a big heavy slow caliber and look for hollow tip subsonic ammo.
You definitely don’t want a caliber that you would have to worry about going through walls of your home and possibly hitting something beyond what you’re trying to kill. Also get a light for your handgun so you can see what you’re trying to kill.

You should buy a beretta 1301. Its an excellent home defense shotgun. Low recoil, easy to shoot, loads of firepower. Theres one for sale on la sportsman right now
