If the NCAA grants him a medical redshirt for the 21 season then yes, he has two years of eligibility left

I don't know if I would say 7th year, but he has 2 years of eligibility left.

He was a junior in the COVID year, not a sophomore.

Should look like this:

2017- Didn't redshirt (Freshman)
2018- Redshirted (RS Freshman)
2019- Backup (RS Sophomore)
2020- Starter but year didn't count towards eligibility (RS Junior)
2021- I'm assuming if he wanted to he could get a medical redshirt (Still RS Junior)
2022- Apparent Starter (RS Junior)
2023 - RS Sr

I think you almost had it. You're right about being a RS Jr in 2020. That year didn't count so he was a RS Jr again in 21. If he gets a Medical RS for 21, then he still doesn't lose eligibility, so he would be a RS Jr again in 22.

FIFY - 3 yrs as a RS Jr.

Close. 2022 he would be a RS Junior if 2020 & 2021 never counted.

You just posted this:
"2021- I'm assuming if he wanted to he could get a medical redshirt (Still RS Junior)"

Also, why would they not give a QB with a broken arm a medical RS?

That was actually a quote of someone else posted. He's not getting a 2021 medical RS after already getting two RS seasons.

Hopefully they try go get him the medical RS.

Even if he wants to be done after next season it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

2021 is medical redshirt. Allowed 1 athletic redshirt and 1 medical redshirt.

No, you have 5 years to play 4. Only one Redshirt.

The only way you can get a 6th year is if after a medical redshirt and you got the same reinjury.
2022 I believe is his last year of eligibility

He should absolutely have 2 years left. Injured after 3 games in 2020 and all year in 2021.

I’m sure he’s hoping to be drafted next year but it’s nice to have the option to come back.

Yes.

He absolutely could start in 2022 and 2023 for the Tigers.

If Walker Howard isn't starting by his second year, either he is not as good as the 5-star rating said he would be or we really fricked up his development.

Don't know if you guys have noticed, but this "let the QB wait and learn" thing is a dying trend in college football. If the kid is good enough, and by all accounts he is and will be, then he should get on the field as soon as he is ready.

I don’t think that’s how it works. He can’t apply for a Medical Redshirt for 2021 right now. You can only apply for it retroactively after your eligibility is expired. And it’s not an automatic granting of it. You have to make a case (i.e. “apply”) to the NCAA, and it can be denied. It’s moot, though, because there’s no way they’re giving him a 7th season, and even less of a chance that he’d take it. Nobody wants that. If he either gets hurt again next season or simply just gets beat out for the job, it’d be time to just go ahead and hang up the ol’ cleats, coach.
