Anyone noticed how the D improved once the 5 star players concerned with their brand left?

Talent means Jack shite if they aren’t in it for the team.

I think things took off once they finally started to blitz and mix up the defense. It was odd, they didnt do any of it all year until Alabama game...

We would've beat Alabama with those players you're trying to bring down.

The D improved after Lane Kiffin called Ed after the Ole Miss game and told him "You guys are running the same shite every play"

Nah. Imagine how much better the D would be with 5 star studs playing corner with flott in the slot. This only proves you have a coaching problem versus a personnel one. Defense is more ferocious with the full squad.

100%. They would have crushed UCLA with that aggression.

Yea they credit some analytics Marucci came up with to identify high character players to recruit. Wonder what became
Of those metrics they aren’t patting themselves on the back for that these days that’s for sure.

It took four losses for the coaches to send a damn blitz

they became more aggressive when the talent went down. With more talent they were more conservative.

I think the defense improving had a lot more to do with Ed getting out of the way than it did Stingley and Ricks being out of the lineup.

That was the damnedest thing. I've yet to hear any explanation for this that was intellectually satisfying.

sounds right. I’ll never understand them not sending pressure early on. It was the dumbest decision of a season where there were many dumb decisions.

Most have it backwards — o decided to step in prior to the Bama game, he meddled to change the front and add the zero
Blitz.

His thoughts on the recent results from DC Daronte Jones...

"I am proud of him. Really proud of him. When I went in during the open week, and said (what we were doing), and he put it in and didn’t blink. And he’s calling it. To call zero blitz, you gotta have some you know what. And he’s doing it, and he’s not blinking."

On the decision to move to 3-4 looks on defense...

"I told the guys we have to change going into Alabama. I was looking at the front, since that’s my expertise, and we weren’t stopping the run in the 4-3. You have to do different things … I knew some defenses we could put in that were better against the run, and they would change their blocking schemes. Why I was doing that, other people were researching, and Coach Coyle came up to me and said he’s got blitzes that he knows can get home, but they have to be zero. I said run them. We put them in, ran them all week and they have been working for us."

We had obvious leadership problems this year. The best the defense has looked has been the last few games after O got fired, and the first half of UCLA. Once the D got gassed, the offense wasn’t doing anything, and it was clear it was going to be a 2020 repeat, the team spiraled and the big brand guys gave up.

We won’t have that problem in 2022.

And Auburn

Not sure how Kentucky and Ole Miss would have played out because they both beat us like a drum. Saying that sounds crazy.

When Neal Ferrell got Benny Logan back things changed drastically.

Neal was in the backfield all game.

Goes to show you just how much better you can be when the middle of your D gets pressure.

Just look at how terrible we looked when Shanahan got blown up constantly during the auburn game.
