Not sure what the exact qualifications are...but do you have an EIN? Would assume that would put you into a small biz category, no? Do you have employees?

I’m sorry, but it is very tempting to make an OT type of joke. I’ll refrain. If you have a registered business I’m sure you can get a small business loan.

get with LOUISIANA WORKS just like you would as a W2 employee. setup account and/or call. You may need to call.

Q: I'm self-employed and didn't previously qualify for unemployment. Am I eligible now?

A: Yes. This bill creates a new program, called Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, that extends benefits to gig workers, contractors and others who wouldn't otherwise qualify for unemployment compensation but cannot work due to the coronavirus emergency. You'll get the $600 per week, plus half the average unemployment benefit in your state.

The above is for 1099's/sole proprietors/independent contractors.
So in Louisiana the normal UI weekly is $247.00 Cut in half and add to 600 and you have 723.50 a week.

Q: What happens when my state unemployment benefits run out?

A:In most states, people who lose their job can typically get up to 26 weeks of unemployment, and then it stops, even if you haven't found a new job. This bill will provide another 13 weeks once it runs out. After those 39 weeks, if an "extended benefits" program is triggered, that can provide an additional 13 to 20 weeks of compensation.

He does not need any of that to get the UI for pandemic. Loans is a different story.

He could be using a S-corp just for taxation(then he would have the EIN) but still work for himself writing himself a salary. with zero employees. Not sure if he could get the UI then or have to get a business loan.

I shoulda re-activated my S-corp sooner. screw all these self employment taxes(yeah i am looking at you SS and medicare) unless you have a ton of above the line deductions which lower it. For now, most of mine are below the line due to my solo401k huge contributions which do not help with SE tax. thankfully I have some nice tax credits coming to me also. I got with sec of state today seeing what i need to do to re-activate. Gonna get back to saving a lot on taxes.

We're an LLC treated as an S. I'm happy with the decision.

let us know what you find out so others with LLC's, s-corps, etc will know if they can get the pandemic UI or if loans are only option.

My wife is in same boat. Beauty shop. No employees. Sole proprietor. We called LaWorks and registered for unemployment last week. We got determination response saying she qualifies for zero. Was told when applying to keep watching their website for update about her eligibility for Unemployment under stimulus but nothing yet. Feel like we are in limbo.

My business is making almost $0 right now, but I have a lot of work to do in preparation for when we get back to normal. If I didn't have all this work and I was something like a tradesman out of work for the time being, I'd absolutely go somewhere like Walmart right now.

I have a few contractors that will need this. Do they just apply through Louisiana's site? How do they go about this? I have seen nothing for them.

I also need the same information for contractors in other states that work for me.

Did your business pay into unemployment? If not, I don't see how you would qualify.

Everyone qualifies including 1099 self-employed who typically do not pay into unemployment.

yep. supposedly. poster above alluded to the fact LA is not setup yet for 1099 pandemic UI when he checked although it IS covered by trumps plan. coming soon. supposedly. Guess the website is still only setup for W2 claims. The state has never had to go through this before so it will be a clown show.

That's why, I wasn't being a dick, but it seems to me if you are self employed and out of work you are better off just finding a temp job right now somewhere that is desperate for help. Why wait on the government when there are quite a few opportunities. $15/ hour for 40 hours a week is $600/ week.
