Did not see a post and did a search.

One of the six to eight potent sea weapons of China is gone. Everyone is quiet.

Some officer in the US Navy is getting a commendation that his family and friends will never see or know about

Odd wording. Don't usually see submarines referred to as having "crashed."

I'm assuming the USN tails/tracks these things every time they leave port so I'd bet we know exactly what happened to it and where it is.

Maybe they defected. I bet they sailed up a US river at night time.

Dad was on a submarine that crashed back in the 80s but luckily for me it wasn't fatal.

I would say with reasonable confidence that the USN tracks these things, chinese, russian, or otherwise, every time they leave port and knows exactly where they are without exception.
If NASA, the last government agency on the teat, can design and build a radio telescope that can see to the edge of creation, DAPRA can certainly build a device that can find from low-earth orbit a 300' metal tube, 40' in diameter, submerged in 1000' feet of water.
