Those who served - would you say the US military is still the best in the world?

With Joe threatening to get us in Ukraine and Taiwan.. what’s your level of confidence that we still have the guys to win a major conflict?

I know we have superior technology and equipment to everyone else, but I’m curious if those who were or are in the military think todays culture has softened our troops to where we can’t win.

Thoughts?

We still have the best military in the world. No one can even come close to matching our military. Best military this planet has ever seen.

I think the average army guy and average marine now is less by a bit.

id say the navy overall is way way better now. and the marine officer Corp is better.

the usaf is at its best now.

overall better now.
training and materials and tech all better by a lot.

Yes, but that does not mean we can just blow anyone right out of the water

If we get into WW3 we will take many losses and might even lose if we don't put our best foot forward

We have the best technology in the world. Our average enlisted man is not as badass as they were in the 60's and 70's. We should take a look at how Israel trains their guys.

But we are still superior on a grand scale

I served. It’s not our military I am concerned about it’s our leaders and how that impacts our military. Just one veterans personal opinion.

that was always the case.

in the war in the Philippine islands after us navy beat Spain fleet the locals objected to yet another western colonial power and 2,000 us troops died vs an amateur uprising on just a couple of islands.

we got into ww1 very late.
we got into ww2 late.
pearl says the U.S. military was not ready for prime time on Dec 7.

USA is vulnerable.
so is every spot on earth since nukes and missiles.

My assumption is that our military - in a clearly defined conflict where we're not focused on making sure the indigenous force is handheld and in the fight and we're not trying to follow some script about peacekeeping/avoiding occupation/etc. - would still dominate

I've been off active duty since 2005 and for awhile there worked as a DA Civilian up until 2019. I think any of us Veterans who look at the younger generation's military will always think of them as softer than when we were in but I do have some genuine concerns, part of that is due to our culture as well as our battle readiness.

I won't get too much into the culture part of that statement as I think a hot war would fix some of that in short order. I think with the draw down in the ME, our military has had too much time on their hands that have allowed politicians to use us for social experiments, but that would quickly change in the event of an actual war popping off in my opinion.

My larger concern is the readiness of our military to fight a near peer adversary such as a Russia (Not as big a threat as originally feared) or more importantly, China in a multi domain operations, large scale ground war. For decades we've been stuck in the ME fighting COIN operations against cavemen without the technological capabilities to project their power across the globe with the exceptions of limited strikes like what happened on 9/11. We may have the experience advantage in actual combat, but will need to retrain to fight non COIN operations, and that was a big point of focus when I left in 2019 when Trump was still in office. I honestly don't know if that is the focus under this administration.

As I mentioned earlier, we have to adapt to fighting across the board in a MDO. A topic of discussion back then was that the military is going to have to change to keep up with China when it comes to recruitment, especially to fight the cyber war. The military just won't be able to attract the most talented cyber folks with low paying junior enlisted or officer pay. It is one field where I and others believe the military is going to have to start admitting folks like that at advanced rank otherwise they won't come to the military. It will be weird and a tough adjustment but the ground pounders are going to have to accept the fact that for some careers in the military, especially in cyber, folks are going to be coming in as majors or higher straight out of college. Keep in mind, these folks will never be picking up a rifle on the battlefield, they don't have that sort of experience.

It's the most overwhelming in the world.

It's not nearly as good as it could be.

Best equipped in the world for sure. If we had a big war that required a draft America would prevail because the men in this country would step up to the plate and do the fighting. The active duty military for the most part are not the best men we have in this nation. Outside of special
Ops most of the active duty people are just frick ups!
