Golf in Houston?

Have a job opportunity that might lead me to Houston for 4/5 years. Was wondering what the golf is like in Houston as compared to New Orleans? Also, what are some good semi private clubs to look into? I don’t want to join a club with huge initiation fees if I’m only there for 4 years. Any clubs worth looking into? Or should I just play a bunch of different ones?

What’s your budget?
Some clubs north and in woodlands aren’t outrageous on the initiation fees like the ones closer to city center are

I’d be living downtown, don’t think I’d want to pay over 10k for initiation. To be completely honest, I’d rather do a really nice muni that I can do a pass on.

If you’re living downtown, I’d join Memorial Park. It’s where the Houston open is moved to and it neighbors River Oaks CC. It was a decent track before the redo. I heard at one time it was the second busiest golf course in the US.
Your other option would be to join a club Corp facility, which would give you access to all the other club Corp clubs. That should still be in your price range as well.

If you’re downtown, I’d just play random courses for the time you’re there as there will be many options within a 15-20 mile radius.
Wildcat has two courses and is nice. They may have some sort of ‘membersip’ But it’s a public course.
Mid-tier courses within a short drive are Cypreswood, Battleground, etc. Pearland has a couple of decent courses.
Not sure how they are changing but Memorial was always a huge headache to try and get on and long rounds. Sharpestown is a decent muni and good for an afternoon weekday round. They recently redid Gus Wortham but haven’t been there. It was a goat ranch before.

Plenty of good options depends what area you live in. I work at Meadowbrook Farms in Katy which is semi private but plenty of good courses.

I lived downtown and had a membership at Wildcat for a while. The courses are quirky and I got tired of it, so I switched over to Cypresswood. The tradition course is a nice track.
Memorial is nice for an afternoon round, but it’s a slog in the mornings and on weekends.

How old are you? 10k could swing some junior memberships at some places that it wouldn’t be enough for full membership

Just go ahead and join Bluejack National OT Lochinvar and be done with it. You can swing the chump change.

Parents moved to the heights my freshman year of college. They joined Kingwood since I played golf every summer and they have the most golf available. Once I graduated, I joined ONE through downtown club which is the best downtown gym. I then had access to every single ClubCore club in the nation, which includes Firestone in Akron. I had the initiation fee waived ($120) and paid I think $120/month.
Worth it.
Worth it.

You could make it to Lake Charles Country Club quicker from downtown than to BJN.

Spend time playing different courses. Memorial and Gus Wortham are good muni alternatives. Gus Wortham is a decent course, recently went through a multimillion dollar renovation. Holes 1-3 are boring but once you get passed those it’s nice. Memorial is real easy to get to from downtown. You can now book 30days in advance by paying a $20 fee. Problem with commiting to one club is the traffic/travel distance. Even on weekends traffic can be a bitch.

Noted, I’ll start another thread once the move is finalized.
