Ross Bridge will be back open by then which is the best public course in the area. I enjoy Horse Creek and Ballantrae as well.

In no particular order: Ross Bridge, the RTJ courses, Bent Brook, Highland. Could be some cold weather golf.

I recommend driving out to limestone springs. No idea of the conditions, but really pretty layout

My buddy just joined limestone and said they’ve dumped some money into the course and it’s in great shape
For public golf around here I usually play highland park, the RTJ courses, oak mountain or drive out to farm links in sylacauga. All of them are good options. Highlands is kinda fun because it’s so short and you can make a lot of birdies. Greens are usually really good for a public course

I’m glad to hear that.
The last time I played there it was in decline.
Did they switch the greens from bent?
Too far south to have bent grass without tons of money.

See if you can get on at Pine Tree near Leeds.
It’s private, but I think if you call ahead from out of town they might work a time out for you.

Limestone is as good as it’s ever been right now. I’d highly recommend it.
Ross Bridge will be open
Oxmoor Valley Courses are nice, I prefer the Ridge.

Timberline is good, if you want wide open with bent grass greens, bent Brook.

Does anybody know about Highland Park Golf Course? It is going to be on my way home from new job. I briefly started playing last year but still need some lessons and practice. Is this a good spot?

Yes, it's a fun course with good greens and lots of elevation change. Beautiful views of downtown as well. Not the longest course, but still can be challenging with the elevation changes. I definitely recommend it as a place to play in Bham.

I enjoy highland park but it has been years. The private clubs have some great courses also if you are able to get on any.

No, happened about this time last year.
Ross Bridge Herbicide Story
quote:
Earlier in September, the maintenance staff mistook a 1-ton bag of herbicide and fertilizer mix for a bag of green sand that was to be applied to the putting surfaces. The herbicide was spread across the greens of Nos. 5-18, killing much of the bent grass on those surfaces. The bag of herbicide had been stored in the wrong building before the mishap, said John Cannon, chairman of Sunbelt Golf Corporation that operates the Trail’s 26 courses at 11 sites. He said the herbicide mix could appear as being green to the naked eye, similar to the mix that was supposed to be spread across the greens.
“It was just the wrong product in the wrong place, and it should never have happened,” Cannon said. “It’s pilot error, no doubt about it.”

It was a very old course when I was a kid. Short muni.
Now it’s not long, but they have rerouted some and redesigned some holes.
I guess it was maybe 25 years ago when they refreshed the course.
I sort of miss the old Highland, but it is better maintained than it use to be.
When I played it after the redo, we were like “this use to be 17 tee” or “this lake was in front of 11 tee back in the day.”

Highlands is great. 5800 yards from the tips and the greens are really good for a public course. It’s cartpath only at all times though which is annoying.
Being so short it’s a nice change of pace and every hold outside of maybe 7 and 11 are legit birdie opportunities. Great for confidence building

It is an old course. I believe Bobby Jones won a tourney there back in the day. Very well maintained for a public course.

When Smylie Kaufman got married a few years back, rickie, JT and Spieth came in town and they played at highlands. I bet they birdie//eagled every hole out there
