I read the synopsis. I don't need to pay to feel like shite. I'm married with teenagers.

That's a mighty bold claim, sir

Its an LBGTQ film, I couldn't enjoy it at all, just didn't resonate with me. 4/10 and its only because I like Brendan Frasier as a human.

I’m pretty sure when someone says “best movie since…….”, it’s never as good as they think it is in their head.

It's just recency bias. I always let something stew. I enjoyed Maverick last year, but I can't pretend it is the GOAT movie. It may be (unlikely), but it is too soon. Let's see how it holds up in a couple of years.
But back to your other point:

The OP suggested this movie is the "best" since Shawshank, a film that has, over time (see my earlier point), garnered almost universal praise.
But, that would mean the Whale is better than:
The Dark Knight, The LOTR films, The Departed, Gladiator, No Country, There Will Be Blood, etc.
And it almost certainly is not better than any of those films, much less all of them. Is it even the best Aronofsky film?

I'm sure it's very different than all of those you listed. Sounds like it might be good for what it is, but not if you go in expecting: Shawshank Redemption, The Dark Knight, The LOTR films, The Departed, Gladiator, No Country, There Will Be Blood, etc.

That's my point - OP in trying to sell folks on seeing the film (which I likely will not, full disclosure) is setting extremely high expectations. That goes against conventional wisdom: Under promise, over deliver.

I might see The Whale, but I know it’s not better than Braveheart. Hell it’s probably not better than The Usual Suspects. I’m sure it’s good though, hyperbole notwithstanding.

The story is so simple . It’s not the best movie ever
But Fraser is incredible in it. His eyes are so sad . It’s worth it to watch his performance .

Talk about being killed by faint praise

I'm trying to come up with a premise for a movie that sounds less appealing than the premise of this movie, and it's not an easy exercise
