Or looked over for another colleague for said promotion?

Essentially yes. When this happens start looking for a new job.

I was about 2 years into an oilfield warehouse job making $12/hour and was training new hires making $17/hr.
When I found out I went straight to my boss and HR. They said they would increase to match but month after month it never came.
My attitude of course went to shite and I started slacking to send a message. They suspended me for 3 days. During my days off, I found a job at a competitor making $18/hr and never looked back.

If it happened I’d be looking for the next job.
Some people think throw it out and make them say no take a lap. This market dictates if they say no to go grab a bigger check at another place

Yes, and my non-promotion turned out to be one of God's unanswered prayers.

It’s a great thing to know where your employer stands. The plus is you get to look while still employed.

Yes, but colleague deserved it more. It was a turning point in my professional career, I will put my best effort in but I am also not the best accountant that's ever existed. No shame in that.

Once. Then got a PIP from my new boss. I think he was just trying to establish dominance because he had been hired in after me and I had been offered previous his job before he took it but passed. Long story short, i waited until he right moment and held a finance deal hostage until they pulled the PIP and restored my bonus. Ended up getting 2X what i would have gotten and we actually ended up with a pretty good relationship after that. Don't be afraid to drag your nuts over someones face, even if it's your boss.

Yea gotta know where you stand and nothing better than being able to look for opportunity while still cashing a check.
If you already have a job it’s easy to gamble a bit more push terms and be picky. It also helps that in accounting there is a huge talent shortage you have that and some b4 and you can get anything.

Yes. We got a new director, he brought in all his own people, then later they all got fired for malfeasance. I then got the promotion I should’ve gotten instead of “his boy” he brought in..but they had ruined the organization by that time

No, but I did turn down one. It was a burn out job with no good way out. They understood and didn’t hold it against me when a better opportunity came up and I took it.

Please do elaborate….

Yes,
I had longer tenure, higher education and trained the guy that got the next level promotion. He was the hiring managers cousin. I plead my case to our ethics hotline and they removed him from the position about five months later. I transferred to another department and do not talk to those people or have to deal with them.

Yes. Because I was to young, a week after being told that I drug-up and never looked back.
I was a shop hand/machinist at 18. I use to make test samples for weld procedures and material certs, I had been doing it about 2 1/2 yrs. Our lab tech got into a wreck on his way to work and passed away. The owner had a meeting with us and asked if anyone would be interested in taking over as the lab tech (we only had 1). I told him I was. He told me I was to young. Went find another job and put in my notice. He came out of his office when he heard and begged me to stay, I told him to frick off, if I'm too young to break the samples I'm to young to make them.

Absolutely true in my case too.

Yes - but in hindsight, it was the right call for the business and for me.
My little fee fees got hurt for a bit, but it forced me to grow. I should be the leading candidate next time around.

Yep.
When I worked in a psychiatric facility/group home, I got passed over when I wanted to move to a less restrictive house on campus. I was in the most restrictive houses (PRTFs) and rotating between the three. Their excuse was because I consistently came to work and did my job that it would be “easier” for them to hire someone into the less restrictive house (PCC) because the position I was in had a lot to turnover (rightfully so). Pay would have been the same but I would have had the same kids all week and ones that weren’t so intensive.
I quit about three weeks later.

Yes. Thankfully, early in my career someone taught me to not focus on applying for a promotion but always work to be in consideration for ANY promotions that may come up.
Like it or not, for most promotions the hiring manager already has it narrowed down to 2-3 candidates. I’d recommend asking what it’d take to be considered rather than why you didn’t get the promotion or were passed over in favor of another candidate.
