Are you awake for surgeries?

So, I was just talking to my mother about her upcoming complete knee replacement surgery. She's already had her other knee done. She'd 88 years old and said she'll be wake for the surgery. I was shocked. She said when she had her tubes tied years ago that she was awake. They also removed her appendix at that time. Doctors were discussing their condos during her surgery....lol. She asked what's the issue....everything is deadened anyway. She called be a tiddy baby (seriously.) Probably right in this case. I'm just too nervous before surgeries. Tough woman.

Yes - my patients complain if I nap.

Knock me out with an acme hammer if the drugs don't put me out
I don't want to be aware of anything going down while sections of my body are open and getting installs done.

C Section the wife is awake during it. Honestly it’s kinda shocking considering what’s going on

Total knee replacement is usually a pretty brutal surgery and they usually put you all the way under with general anesthesia. Not sure if there is an issue with her health/age that would prevent them from doing that.

You are awake when you get snipped. Ladies are awake for c sections. Ain't no thing as long as you can't feel it

I’ve had 4 surgeries and was awake for 3 of them. Now awake is a loaded term as I was pretty high on something for them so I was kind of out of it, but not fully under.

C-sections are different, they need to stay awake for those.
Total knee replacements are another ball game. It is general anesthesia meaning you are knocked the frick out.

Yeah, she'll be on some sedative but awake. When she had her appendix removed the doctor looked over the little curtain and asked her if she wanted it removed while he was already in the area tying her tubes. That's just crazy to me.

They can give her a regional block to prevent any feeling at the surgical site or do a spinal block to block everything below a certain point. Ortho surgeries can be brutal to someone who doesn't know what's going on (hammers and saws) so they can give her something light like versed that will keep her relaxed during these points of the surgeries but won't put her to sleep. There is likely a reason they don't want to put her completely under or it is just the surgeon/anesthesia group's preference.

I've had three knee surgeries & a shoulder surgery...and have been under anesthesia for all of them - was never even remotely given an option to stay awake.
Also, would never want to be awake for ortho shite - those are brutal.

Being awake while an ortho bro beats and bangs around during a total knee is not my idea of a fun morning.

Her preference. It's all her.

I was knocked out when I had ear surgery as a kid, and when they took pictures of my colon. I feel like it was the right call both times.
Also, that colonoscopy prep drink is the worst. It was disgusting and I was peeing out my butt hours later. I felt so nasty.

The. Worst.
I've had two (had to start early thanks to parent having colon cancer), and the last one I was puking, shitting...it was horrible.
As for sedative - I've done twilight both times. Out, but not fully under. Doc said he get's about 1-2 guys p/qtr that want to stay awake for the procedure, and that 90% of those are doctors.

If it were my mom I would suggest she rethink it. Just the sounds of a total knee are gonna make her think they are building a house.

There have been numerous improvements in the replacement of joints and other body parts in the past ~5-10 years, as well as improvements on how to complete various procedures.
I've done some reading on minimally invasive knee replacements in the past. I figure the hospital would insist on anesthesia, for multiple reasons (not the least of which is the second bill).

I just spoke to her again after seeing that gif above. I told her she needs to reconsider that option. I told her I didn't won't her awake as they're kicking her arse. I told her she can't reconsider while laying on the table having it done.
