Yacht Club parking lot booby-trapped during company's Christmas party

The parking lot of Tuscaloosa's North River Yacht Club was booby-trapped with homemade tire spikes Friday night during a Christmas party for employees and executives at Warrior Met Coal.
Stephanie Taylor, a spokesperson for the Tuscaloosa Police Department, said TPD officers responded to the high-end venue around 7:40 p.m. after a security guard there discovered some of the traps in the roadway and parking lot of the club.
quote:
Taylor said the devices were homemade caltrop spikes designed to destroy tires that ran over them. Officers and security staff believe they collected all the spikes, but said at least six vehicles ran over caltrops and suffered tire damage.
quote:
Taylor said investigators are looking into the possibility that the trap was set in relation to the ongoing labor strike at Warrior Met -- nearly 1,000 coal miners have been on strike there since April 2021 over their contracts
quote:
Laborers say Warrior Met cut their salaries and instituted strict attendance policies after the company bought all the assets of the bankrupt Walter Energy in 2016, with the promise that things would get better when the company found its financial feet.
Now, with the company's profits soaring, the workers say Warrior Met has not kept its promises about improving their contracts to reflect the changed situation.

I’m very familiar with this company and the strike. This was 100% the Union’s doing. The strike has been going on for a long time, maybe a year? I can’t remember now jene it started because it’s been going on so long. It’s mostly petered out though. Most of the miners have gone to work elsewhere. There’s picket shacks set up outside their mine locations. Rarely do you see anyone there. And when they are there, it’s usually only maybe 2-3 and they’re just sitting around on their phones. It’s kinda pathetic. As for Warrior Met, with the price of coal where it is, they’re (1) running at full bore and (2) swimming in revenue.

Glad to see a company thumb its nose at unions. There's never a reason to give in to union demands.

There isn’t really much of a Union left there now. Just a handful of malcontents is all that’s left. Those pitiful shacks that pass for a picket line I mentioned that sometimes have 2-3 guys on their phones, more often than not they’re empty.

We called them Jack Rocks in Harlan, not sure why. The best ones are hollow, that way they let the air out of the tire.
The UMWA is dirty, always has been. They've caused alot of issues at Warrior Met. Shooting power transformers with rifles. Rock Jacks in tires of anybody that comes along even schoolbuses. They even tried to blow up a natural gas line there but didn't go as planned. I know a few people that work there and have heard all the stories. Lots of miners from KY have moved here to work there. I know a boy that works there and after he crossed the picket line to work, his truck tires were slashed at his house.

My first thought would be eco-terrorists.
Maybe strikers working with eco-terrorists?
Maybe strikers working with eco-terrorists?

Yeah, stupid peasants demanding 5 day/40 hour work weeks. Damn those unions filled with lazy bums.

I can be sympathetic to the union employees, but also acknowledge their predicament is their own doing.
Unions, including coal workers, have spent a great deal of time and resources exclusively supporting and electing Democrats.
Now those politicians they have long supported are a solid voting block against the coal industry and the coal workers livelihood. Don’t cry when companies have no choice but to react by laying off employees and scaling back benefits and wages.

Have they not worked in almost 2 years? Or is there another way to strike and keep working?

"I'm on strike" is a good way to keep people off your case for not having a job.

There is nowhere near 1,000 left on strike. I’d say there’s there’s way less than 50. I’ve never seen more than 2-3 at a time picketing.

Man, if your strike is going on for nearly a year, it’s not an effective strike.

Booby traps aren’t near as cool as they sound
