Worse as in unsafe, dangerous, etc.
Having a debate with someone. I say Montgomery they say Memphis.

You can look up the stats yourself, but the answer is Memphis.

Both are terrible, but Memphis is the answer and it's really not that close

I disagree. The highs and lows of Memphis are there, but they have more "good" things. If by living there, I would say Memphis, also, although folks with means would stay just outside the city.

There’s quite a few posters here from Memphis, including myself.
We moved from BR to Memphis 4 years ago and could never go back. Lived in Nola for 5 years prior to BR. Crime in Memphis is ridiculously centralized to certain areas. We live in Central Gardens and really enjoy where we are. That’s about all I can contribute to the conversation.

There wouldn’t happen to be a common denominator here with all the cities mentioned in this thread right?

Well, the OP was about safety, and while Montgomery might not have the music scene or the food of Memphis, the violent crime rate is 3x higher in Memphis compared to Montgomery.
And you can live in the suburbs of Montgomery as well as you can with Memphis.

Montgomery. They are both pieces of shite but at least Memphis has sports and good food.

Actually, Memphis (murder rate 24 per 100,000) is not quite as bad as Baton Rouge (44 per 100,000).

Yeah I’m convinced most of the people shitting on Memphis have never been here. Lots of very nice areas, upscale suburbs are about as nice as any big city I’ve been to.

I’ve lived in both as an adult with kids and single. I actually like both, but in the safe areas, you are so much closer to crime in Montgomery than in Memphis. I am in the downtown to east Memphis to germantown corridor every day and I never feel unsafe. There was not a stretch anywhere in Montgomery that wasn’t 1 or 2 blocks from some really shady areas until you get way out past Taylor Rd. I like Montgomery but the crime is over a much more widespread area.
Memphis crime, as the previous poster said, is so compartmentalized in certain pockets, it’s almost unnoticeable. Most all of the crime in Memphis is tied to neighborhood rivalries and drug trade, that it doesn’t spoil a lot of the city and surrounding area.
All of that plus Memphis has the benefit of a being a major city amenity, restaurant, entertainment wise that if being forced to choose between the two, Memphis takes it easily. I do miss the 3 hr commute to Walton county beaches though.

What’s Montgomery’s nickname? I can’t remember.

It’s weird how Montgomery jumped Birmingham and now Birmingham is 3rd most populous city in Alabama. (Montgomery is 202,000 and Birmingham is 197,000, according to 2021 estimates.)
The Birmingham metro is still WAY bigger than either the Huntsville or Montgomery metros, and Birmingham is still more densely populated than Huntsville…but if trends continue, people are going to wonder why it was such a good idea to make Birmingham to junction point for Alabama’s interstate system:
Huntsville doesn’t even technically have an interstate (it has that tiny little I-65 spur).

Montgomery. There's shite to do in Memphis, for better or worse. Ain't shite in Montgomery but the Capitol and a prison which may as well be the same damn thing.

In how many decades?
Huntsville’s metro is 490k vs Birmingham’s 1.1 million. With Shelby County’s consistent growth, I don’t see Huntsville catching Birmingham any time soon.

Montgomery also has Maxwell AFB and Air University...

People from Hoover or Mountain Brook no more claim Birmingham as "home" than I do.
