F1 abandons plans to race in the Americas this year

COVID-19 infection rates in the U.S., Mexico and Brazil are among the highest in the world, and, when that was combined with the logistical challenge of moving the sport's travelling circus between continents, F1 decided it was impossible to plan for races in those territories.
Three new rounds in Germany, Portugal and Italy have been scheduled to fill the section of the calendar usually reserved for races west of Europe.
The coronavirus pandemic forced F1 to rip up its original 22-race calendar this year, and so far it has confirmed 13 rescheduled races on the European continent (see sidebar above).
The sport is still in discussions about holding races in Asia in November, including a rescheduled date for the Vietnam Grand Prix that was originally scheduled for April. The 2020 season will conclude in mid-December, with two races planned in Bahrain and the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

How do they even get those cars over here?
This seems like a logistical nightmare that isn't worth it during a pandemic with no fans anyway.

I think they use a combination of freight shipping on cargo ships and literally flying them in cargo jets. Logistics really is crazy

According to Vivid Seats, it's only postponed. Of course they get to keep $ as long as it's postponed and not cancelled.

I think I read shipping the tires is the most expensive part of racing on different continents. I’m not sure if that’s correct though.

There is a really good youtube video of all the logistics that go into F1. most teams have 3-5 full race setups (other than cars) that they have ready to go for the next few races.

Just the weight alone adds up when you ship that many sets of tires.
Reading now each team ships between 40/50 tons of freight to each race. That’s just the teams.
Up to 2,000 tons of freight is moved in total for each race.

Wendover does a great job there.
For years F1 came to North America just for Canada so not sure how much the actual logistics plays into it. The financial logistics, and risk, probably just don't make sense.
They have put together an amazing calendar this year staying in the europe and I don't think financially it makes sense to give up that golden goose.
