Have edge defenders ever been more impactful?

Seems like every week TJ Watt and Micah Parsons are taking over games. Yeah, I know there have been great pass rushers throughout NFL history, but what we’re seeing from these guys is really special IMO.

Derrick Thomas absolutely took over games.

I think defensive coaches are using their abilities in different ways now, as well as most edge guys being able to run 4.4-4.6 in a 40 these days. Also preaching how to bat passes down has been taught a lot different now

Parsons said on Mcafee that he's been taking snaps at scout team RB

Offesnive line play may be the worst we've seen in years.
Most veterans barely play in preseason anymore and college rpo/spread schemes do these guys zero favors at the next level.

Not taking anything away from the stud edge rushers—Parsons, Bosa, Watt, Garrett—those guys would have dominated in any era. But there does seem to be a lack of dominant LTs throughout the league currently. Now, that could be a chicken or egg thing. Are the edge guys just so good that it makes the OTs look not so dominant when they maybe would have in a different era. Or does the lack of dominant OTs make it easier for the freak show edges to take advantage.

It's probably because there is so much passing these days. There are more opportunities for a great edge rusher to make a difference.

Derrick Thomas, LT, Ricky Jackson, Pat Swilling (brief time), Charles Haley.
As mentioned, there is so much passing now and shotgun. Defenders go flat out. Not to mention we are in the middle of a period like the late 80’s where there are a surplus of truly great ones. Talking first ballot HOFers if they keep it up and get lucky (health).

Yeap. When you dont have to defend for the run, it makes things easier for these freak athletes

It really seems like the NFL has peaked regarding the spread and pass happy offenses. Defenses have gone smaller and faster. With the best player playing the edge. Now you're seeing rush heavy teams like San Francisco and Philly dominate.

Do you even Howie Long or LT?

This. Every game there are at least 30-50 pass rush defensive snaps. Not saying they aren't very good, but they are benefitting from the modern game as well.

This is a big part of it. You have to respect the speed these guys have where they can just run around you, but then that opens up these inside moves.
Plus the best offensive lineman generally getting put on the QBs blindside at LT and a lot of the great guys now play a lot of snaps against the RT. So you've got the best player on the defense, if not on the field, against maybe the second best OL on the team, if that.

Edge is cute and all but harold perkins needs to learn MLB

Passing more , but the ball is getting out of the Qb's hands much quicker especially with more skilled ones.

I don't know if the players are better but as you said their impact is bigger based on offenses being played in 2023
There have always been great edge rushers
You had LT leading right into White and Smith then Strahan and Thomas and now you have guys like Bosa and Parsons and Watt.
Parsons isn't always lined up as a traditional DE. I would say Bosa takes 90% or more of his snaps right over an OT. Parsons rushes from everywhere and that gives him more versatility. I think Parsons would suffer a bit in run support if people ran right at him as opposed to a more traditional edge rusher. That is sometimes why the Cowboys don't want other teams to know where he will line up

Also, everything back in the day was 2-back formation, including a big arse fullback. On passing plays, that meant 2 additional blockers to chip on an edge rusher.
Fullback doesn't exist anymore and rarely do you see 2 backs stay in the backfield to block on a passing play.
Also, as I understand modern offense, there's a lot less running up the middle, so an edge rusher doesn't have to worry about over running the play.
