Thoughts on Out of State High School Football games?

Background: My kid is in Middle School here in CO so I don't know anything about HS except for my experiences in the 90s.
But my neighbor has a kid on varsity at our local HS and they are going to Florida in a few weeks for a 4 day trip and games (Varsity/JV). First time we've done this and apparently it's supposed to be an annual thing.
Cool experience I'm sure, but I'm honestly curious the point and no one seems to know.
Is it just something to do because you can/good experience for boys or is there a tangible point to it (money, exposure, etc.)?
I get the big time factories doing this or nearby states. We have a pretty good team (3 P-5 commits), but not at the top of any kind of national polls.
Perhaps I'm cynical and looking for the angle in this, and I'm just not seeing it. Is it as simple as a bonding experience for team? Who is benefiting? All I can come up with is the travel agency.

Unless its bordering neighboring states, I think it's pretty dumb. But, given recruiting and sites like 247, Rivals, On3, and given high school athletics and certain schools like IMG, Bishop Gorman, and Mater Dei, it doesn't surprise me anymore.

3 P-5 commits is like top 1% of HS if not more rare. Maybe top 0.1%

if the HS really does have 3 P5 commits it must be cherry creek

Dumb as hell and a waste of athletic department funding. I’m sure there are some very solid OOC CO teams they could have played instead.

Cherry creek came to Ohio last year to play Cleveland area power Lakewood St Edward who went on to win the big school title (Division 1) in 2022. It was a good game with St Edward winning 13-9. No return trip to Colorado so this must of been a 1 year deal.

It's not Cherry Creek. I was curious so looked it up. 2 seemed confirmed. Another is an apparent transfer from another school I'm told. Going to CU so who the hell knows with that program, haha.
Either way, just saying they are a good program for here but they are not a national power by any means. I'm not trying to subtly brag about the local HS team where I don't have a player, lol.

We only did one my entire HS career, which was effectively a way for the coach to be able to have his birthday party at the beach.
Other schools around here have scheduled out of state teams but it tends to be geographically close ones like Wilkinson County Christian School which are just across the border.

Yeah, that's my thoughts. Like I said, those I know with kids in the program are all drinking the Koolaid that this is a great idea and spending/raising money for year is a great idea.
We're in the second largest division and haven't won shite (been close) but not won anything. Not sure why we don't schedule a top team here.
From what I understand, which isn't everything, the trip was planned and the opponent was recently scheduled, so doesn't seem about football only.
I just don't know what I don't know and am curious. Whole things seems like a scam, minus a cool experience for boys.

It sounds like they are going to do a preseason camp so it's not a bad idea to go out and get some different competition. The players usually pay a certain amount to cover the cost.

We played only 2 games out of state while I was in high school. It was the late 90s, but we were down in southeast Alabama, bordering Georgia and Florida. Made a trip to Bainbridge Georgia, and I think somewhere in the Florida panhandle. That was back before the regions expanded and we only had 3 regional games we had to play. The rest of the schedule was up to the schools.
Seemed kind of odd to only play those two when there were plenty of similar sized schools nearby in GA and FL. What made it worse was we would play in state teams that were 4-5 hours away. Baldwin County, Vestavia, Ensley etc. We would also play two of the Montgomery schools every year too. One at home and one at Cramton bowl. Seems like we’d rotate through all of them every couple of years.

One reason is that it is difficult to schedule games when a program is elite. Unfortunately, most schools won't agree to a game so you have big-time programs from different states playing each other.

It’s nice to see how schools from around the county compete with each other.
Rummel went up to New Jersey to play Don Bosco prep, supposedly a perennial contender up in the Northeast. Rummel lost 10-3, after a pick six was called back on a bs call. Entire game, officiating screamed home cooking, it was terrible. They even called a personal foul on Rummel for hitting the deep back too hard on a punt return.
Bosco was supposed to come down and play Rummel here, but the reneged on the deal.

In this case, it’s not a camp. Its one game and one or two JV games (not sure if it’s same opponent).
I’m not saying any of this is bad. I just don’t know how things work anymore and my kid will play there soon. I’m sure it will be a great experience.
I had assumed this stuff was for a Rummel or a cherry creek as others mentioned, and those schools we are not.

If schools want anyone, especially The Big Dogs, going to a camp isn’t going to matter. Recruiters have been watching kids since they were 10 years old, that’s the truth.

Interesting. Usually out of state travel is for the upper echelon teams that are going to be featured on ESPN or they are having a hard time scheduling local games.

quote:that and many of the "selects" still refuse to play the "split voters" in non district games and with a small pool of playoff teams this also sends them looking out of state - you don't see catholic scheduling cath league teams like before the split.
