Reflections of an Old Tiger regarding Joe Burrow
Posted on 2/7/20 at 12:23 pm

I haven’t been able to post any basketball notes recently because of family illness, but I did want to list my personal favorite plays/sequences of Joe Burrow’s career, in chronological order:
1. First game of 2018 against Miami. Burrow recognizes an advantage, changes the play at the line, and hands off for an untouched TD run straight up the gut from midfield. (Personal note: I turned to my wife and said I couldn’t believe it- he still doesn’t know the name of every teammate, but he has the moxxy to change a play in the first quarter of his first game. By the way, the play not only got us 6 points- it sat down and shut up an entire row of Miami “fans” immediately in front of us (thug you, Miami).
2. The closing drive at Auburn in 2018. You just sensed Joe was not going to be denied, and Tracy came through for the win.
3. Fiesta Bowl against UCF. Joe throws a pick 6 and gets cold cocked to the turf and spit on. He rises and trots off the field and proceeds to carve up UCF for the rest of the game.
4. 2019 Texas- 3rd and 17. Do I have to say more?
5. 2019 Bama. Plenty to pick from, but my personal favorite was the TD pass to Clyde after Queen’s interception. We did to Bama what it seems like they have forever done to us.
6. SEC championship- everyone on earth has seen the “Heisman moment” scramble and long pass to Jefferson. The commentators seemed shocked at the play, but we really weren’t- we had seen amazing plays all year.
7. Several from the national championship game, including the bombs to Chase, then hanging in there on the TD throw to Moss, knowing the hard shot was coming. (And this came on the heels of the insane run out of bounds to the 5 yard line, with no time out left).
All of these were great, but the greatest gifts from Joe happened off the field:
A. The players meeting when he was first on campus, and other QBs were transferring out. He told the team he wanted to win and he wanted to lead. And if anyone had a problem with that, speak up and let’s get it on the table. This was leadership personified.
B.Lastly, the legacy for Brennan and those that follow to know that off field game prep is what transforms a good QB into a great one, or once in a great while, an unbelievable one.
Geaux Tigers!

Although I've seen this mentioned a fair bit, I still feel like people are underrating the impact this could have. It has the possibility to go well beyond brennan. Brennan sees the things Joe did to be successful, and hopefully imitates them--making himself successful. But it doesn't stop there; ehe youngsters--finley, johnson, parrish, and hopefully caleb williams--are gonna see brennan's habits, and will likely mimic them too. And on and on down the line. I think there's a really good possibility that Joe may have changed the paradigm for LSU QBs for the next decade-plus. That type of thing can be a legitimate program changer.

His post was actually very good and yours was extremely bad and negative. I am sure he is someone that people like and are comfortable around.

This is the moment Joe transformed into some Incredible Hulk-like version of a quarterback. He never again played like a normal human from that moment on.

Best in my lifetime, first game I attended was 1969

Was watching this game with a friend and asked him did Burrow just audible that play. I was blown away that we had a QB that could read a defense that quickly and that well. That moment got swallowed by this year but you knew then Joe was going to be special

Last I checked, people were free to share their thoughts on a message board. Just like you’re free to act like a douche canoe and shite on 90% of threads you come in contact with.

So he starts off by mentioning a family illness and this is your response?
May the illness transfer over to you.

I think you have to go all the way back to Hodson to find a LSU QB with that many big moments and that type of gritty play.
Even Mauck and Flynn did not have a two year run like Burrow did.

Wrong. Everybody cares but a cumguzzler.

Thanks LAD. Hope all is improving with the family. Great observations that cannot be argued. I had the same thought in the Miami game, but could not have imagined what was to come.

Excellent list, I especially enjoy your 2018 observations because I’ve been one that pointed to those moments all offseason as signs that big things were to come.
You could just sense that he was different, and the fact that he got to campus in June and many of his new teammates weren’t happy about it and resented him chasing off their friends made it all the more incredible.
The one that you left out, and it was the whole game not just one moment, was UGA in 2018.
That was honestly his most impressive performance to me of either season because that was the one game that honestly surprised me. Texas didn’t scare me on D, so I wasn’t worried and after seeing it all come together against them nothing felt scary afterward, including Alabama. The momentum just kept building every week until even Clemson didn’t worry me.
But I 100% thought UGA was just a better team than us in 2018.
But Joe fricking tore that team apart and he did it with his mind and his will, pushing the team to go up tempo constantly, calling to go for it on 4th downs, changing calls to CEH, throwing passes away to avoid what could have been game changing sacks when his outmatched OL was beaten, just an absolute clinic on how to neutralize defenses and keep them off balance.
His numbers weren’t anything special 15-30 200 yards, with countless drops and throwaways to avoid sacks, but also ran for 66 and 2 TDs.
He kept dialing up CEH when the defense didn’t see it coming as well, to the tune of 19 for 145, Brossette also had 16 for 64 and a TD. We ran for almost 300 on a great UGA defense because he could see what they were doing and because he also was a threat to throw, with Jefferson going 6 for 108 in key spots, and eight receivers catching passes in all. The defense just couldn’t figure out where he was going on any given play.
He absolutely owned that defense after the first drive when we went three and out. The D got the ball back and these were out next four drives:
9 plays 65 yards FG
12 plays 84 yards TD
5 plays 53 yards FG
15 plays 50 yards FG
And before Georgia knew what hit them it was 16-0 and the crowd was out of control.
And most importantly Joe started feeling it and showing his swag.
He just answered any time they tried to find some life.
They score their first TD at the end of the 3rd to cut the lead to 19-9, Burrow marches right back for a TD drive including a 2019 like strike to Jefferson for a 26-9 lead.
They get another score mid 4th to cut it to 29-16, Burrow breaks off a 60 yard run then punches in another to ice it at 36-16.
AGAINST THE #2 team in the country.
Ladies and gents, if you didn’t know we had found The One after that game, I don’t know what to tell you.
Also, he was an absolute warrior in that 7OT barnburner against A&M.
I think that was actually what fully won the team over, along with his leadership over the Bowl practices, pushing players to not let good get in the way of great, and obviously his response against UCF on the first day of 2019 was just the final piece of it all coming together.

To Tiger Voodoo, excellent point. Georgia 18 was an incredible game and Joe breaking off that 60 yard run was my favorite. Absolutely a worthy addition to the list.
I’ve been watching the Tigers since 1960, and although there have been incredible players of all positions, talent levels, and pure athletic ability, I have never seen such a transformative LSU football player as Joe.

I have a a poster of Joe smoking that cigar in my man cave. He never let us down..., though he needed help sometimes.
