Georgia State facts

Here’s a few notes on the upcoming opponent:
First season: 2010
All time record: 56-100 (.359)
Bowl Record: 3-2
Primary Rival: Georgia Southern (many people mix the two programs up and they both HATE it.)
They are 6-4 after starting 6-1. LSU is their only payday game this season.
I could see GA State eventually being a UCF like program at the G5 level.

Their RB Marcus Carroll is 3rd in the NCAA in rushing.
Should be a good challenge to see how our run defense performs.

They were a big zone/stretch team years ago when it was the new cool thing.

They need to go to the B12. Sleeping giant as UGA really doesn’t have in state competition. GT admission requirements limit what they can do

If only the legendary QB Quad Brown was still there

That’s a bit of a stretch there. Sleeping Giant? No. G5 NY6 bowl game contender? Maybe.
That’s their ceiling though. And to even get to that status you have to go multiple seasons of 11-1 or 10-2 and throw in an undefeated season or two. That’s how Boise, Cincinnati and UCF did it.

Is it though? If they could string together a few nice seasons it would be crazy for the Big 12 NOT to come calling. Unlike schools like Boise State and other G5s that have had runs of success, these guys are in a huge media market in Atlanta. It’s not hard to conceive that they could be the next UCF and get the call to the Power 5 if they put some resources into the program. Their enrollment exceeds 50K
Not saying they will, but they’re more sleeping giant than perennial G5 underdog story

App State and Troy have been doing that for a decade plus and didn’t get an invite. GA State started their whole program less than 15 years ago

Appalachian State University
Location: Boone, NC
Enrollment: 21,253
Troy University
Location: Troy, AL
Enrollment: 18,086
Georgia State University
Location: Atlanta, GA
Enrollment: 50,521
One of these is not like the others. If they ever wanted to take football seriously, a giant school in a giant market in the heart of SEC country would be awfully appealing target for expansion

Troy is a nemesis for LSU. Now I don't envision Ga State putting up the kind of game Troy has all three times we played them

The program sits in the heart of Atlanta, facilities really aren’t that bad (old turner field) and alumni base actually is pretty strong/deep. The only problem is it’s a massive commuter school.

Georgia State would be just another commuter school. Not really ideal for expansion. Just another UCF and Cincinnati.
BYU was by far the best add they did.

Georgia Southern can put up some points. They will have this board melting by the end of the first quarter.

It's right near Jimmy Carter's presidential library, as well as Margaret Mitchell's home. Heavy credentials for a school that didn't even have a football team before the turn of the millennium.

Weird considering it’s in the center of a huge city. I think of commuter schools like SLU in Hammond or USM in Hattiesburg

SMU is in Dallas, 491 miles (7 1/2 hours drive) from Hattiesburg.
That's one hell of a commute; wouldn't try that more than once or twice a week

Their enrollment is only so large because it’s a huge commuter school.
Edit: I see someone else already mentioned it. They are considered commuter because a very large number of their students live in Alpharetta, John’s Creek, Decatur, Roswell, Marietta, etc. Very very few students actually live in the downtown Atlanta area.
