Paul Dietzel delivered LSU's first National Championship in 1958, and three years later he left LSU in a lurch, saddling us with Cholly Mac and a 45-year drought in national championships. The team he left for...

Cholly Mac was actually a pretty good coach…I wouldn’t say we got saddled with him.

Hard to say LSU was saddled by Cholly Mac. He was pretty darn steady and a good coach.

What the hell? Coach Mac won a ton of games. He also was screwed a couple times

Absolutely loved Charlie Mac! Was an incredible encourager, great human being, love people, I hope I’m in the same place as him at the next level

But by the end he wasn't viewed in the same light.

I post a lighthearted comment, making the best possible case for a grudge against Army football using the only connecting thread the two programs have, and every response is someone getting defensive about Cholly Mac. Never die Rant.

Arsparger left LSU to be AD at UF. That counts because you didn't say "to coach at".

Also you didn't say head coach, so all the assistants that left would count as well. So Aranda left us for Baylor.

I accounted for Arnsparger. Technically, he ceased being a "coach" the moment he signed on with UF, so when he "left" LSU he was no longer a "coach". As far as assistants, according to NCAA rule 536.45.12, the title "assistant coach" is purely ceremonial, as all "assistants" are technically athletic department employees. Each program is only allowed one "coach"

And Coach Mac knew how to recruit for position. He put his best athletes on defense and that worked well for him.
Also, after Coach Mac left, LSU went on a wild roller coaster ride that lasted over 20 years until Saban arrived.

He was Les Miles without a championship. This board would’ve crucified him.

On-the-field results say otherwise. His very first season, 1962, was his best, ending with a Cotton Bowl domination of previously undefeated Texas. At least one year-end poll that season rated LSU #1.

After that it was quite frustrating. Coach Mac's record against elite opponents, particularly Alabama, was subpar. And his record his last six seasons in Baton Rouge was as follows: 5-5-1, 4-7, 6-4-1, 8-4, 8-4, 7-5. Les Miles' fans would have been horrified at that level of mediocreness.

No one was beating Bear back then. Especially his alumni.

Chilly was a damn good coach but got stale.

OP may want to look up Dana X. Bible, College HOF coach who left LSU to coach at another college.
