Lets be honest: Our run schemes have been primitive

Watching the run plays that Miami displayed last night would work perfect with JD5's talents. We have not shown any outside running concepts outside of jet sweeps to Malik right now. We are not using any pulling/zone concepts as well.
I'd like to see some more creativity in our run game both inside the tackles and outside moving forward. All we seem to do is pound the rock with an inside run.

Didn’t Jackson destroy a defender on an outside run?

Yeah he cut it outside. It was not designed that way. Credit Jackson for skating and seeing it.

We can’t block it right now, line is struggling especially interior. I’ll give them props, the pass protection improved. We gotta find some way to create lanes and get push up front.

What changes would you do then? How is it primitive? How is running inside zone with a read component primitive? It’s a spread offense. Sure we need to run more counter and power, but idk if we have the capacity do that with how much our line has been under performing outside of miss state. We have the split zone component with an rpo to it so it causes stress on linebackers. Our run game is fine.

The ground game with the rbs is all centered around giving 5 the option to keep.
Praying that we set out with the intent to let these thumpers do their thing behind this line at some point. I just like watching power football, feel like we have the guys to do it with Diggs and Jackson.

Well for starters I would incorporate a toss in the WR bunch. I'd also put JD5 under center and have a qb sneak in place for short yardage as well potential new looks to break tendencies.
We were basic in our approach against FSU in regards to our run schemes and the only thing that has really changed is better execution. There is so much that JD5 does that is great in running the ball but if he wants to be developed into a real pro QB he is going to have get comfortable with taking snaps under center.

Honestly, they need to stop playing around and design running around Diggs and Jackson. I do not care if they pull guards or not, each one of those dudes need to touch the ball at least 10 times a game. Jackson seems like he would just be a beast once he gets some reps.

Putting him under center doesn’t give him much more options to run the football. I agree we need more option stuff in our system. More counter and power reads out of an empty set. Motioning receivers running power and counter reads on that, but our oline is not at that point yet. They aren’t executing at a high enough level to be able to be successful

I would love to see a reverse with Jayden running wide right and have Anderson or Nabors come back with the reverse. The defense would be keying on JD so much it would open the left side of the field.

it’s encouraging that we have some guys actually hitting cutback lanes on inside zone plays. I feel like we haven’t had good zone running RB while only running inside zone

It would be stopped behind the line.

Most of our running plays utilize zone blocking. The crease shows and the running back usually cuts back through it. It’s a bunch of pushing. It can be dominating because the offense player knows which direction. If the Defense wins the shoving the back still has a couple of options. Anyway, I don’t know if it’s better or worse. That’s what it has been creases between the tackles.

He bounced our one running play outside. If that is going to be our only running play, then our RB's have to be very aware and ready to jump cut or spin into open space. Running into our Olinemen backsides is getting hard to watch, especially inside the 5 yd line.

Even though they have a year in the system, the OL is still starting 2 true sophomores, a junior who missed most of a season due to injury, and another who played a year in a shitty program and hasn’t been great in Frazier. And when he goes out, we have a true freshman who isn’t 100% ready out there.
I think this is the main reason for the lack of variety in the run game. I’m hoping they do use outside and off tackle runs with the backs more as the season goes on and the line gells, because Diggs and Jackson can be really dangerous if they get the edge.

OP is thinking back to the specific run plays we witnessed in 2019 under JOE BRADY’s great tutelage. Kelly and Denbrock do not possess that same imagination, creativity.

His athletic ability at guard will lead to a lot better options for the offense as a whole. Can do a lot of different things from a blocking standpoint.

You mean when we’d hand it to Clyde and he would fake out the DB in our backfield?

Seriously, that was an elite, veteran offensive line. Those guys are pushing NFL defenses around now.
