BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU right-hander Paul Skenes was named Thursday the 2023 National Player of the Year by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
He is the third LSU player to receive the Collegiate Baseball Player of the Year award, joining right-hander Ben McDonald in 1989 and right-hander Lloyd Peever in 1992.
Skenes, a junior from Lake Forest, Calif., is 10-2 this season with a 1.89 ERA in 90.1 innings, and he has recorded 167 strikeout and only 17 walks.
He is ranked No. 2 on LSU’s all-time single-season strikeouts list, trailing only McDonald, who recorded 202 strikeouts in 1989.
Skenes is No. 1 in the nation in strikeouts (167), strikeouts per nine innings (16.64) and WHIP (0.79). Skenes is No. 3 in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio (9.82), No. 4 in ERA (1.89) and No. 6 in hits allowed per nine innings (5.38).
He leads the Southeastern Conference in wins (10), strikeouts (167), earned run average (1.89), innings pitched (90.1) and opponent batting average (.166).
Skenes was voted 2023 SEC Pitcher of the Year on May 22, becoming the first LSU pitcher to win the award since right-hander Aaron Nola in 2013 and 2014.
Skenes, who has allowed two or fewer earned runs in 12 of his 15 starts this season, was named the SEC Pitcher of the Week three times in 2023. He also received Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week recognition on seven occasions.
He has pledged $10 for every strikeout he records this season to Folds of Honor, a nonprofit organization that provides educational scholarships to the spouses and children of military and first responders who have died or been disabled.

LSU fans don’t realize how good we have it here.
Time after time, we get generational talent, in every sport, to put on the purple and gold. Yet most of their time here is met with bitching and crying, mostly about trivial shite, but still… LSU fans have had it better than most for the longest time, and I don’t think they realize it. Look at the talent we’ve had come through Baton Rouge over the last decade….

It’s a shame I only got to watch him play one game and it was an all time disaster in the SECT.

Well deserved and extremely awesome to see. I expect a huge bounce back performance on Saturday from him. Look for 13+ strikeouts and another dominant shut down outing from him.
Truly been a fun season to watch him every game 1 of the weekend series as he took the mound. Truly spectacular from him.

If we're not getting elite results with that elite talent, it's ok to comment about it and ask why.

Yeah, I'm with you. I look for him to be extended in the regionals and supers. His pitch count has been well managed all season. The first half of the season he averaged around 99 pitches per game. He ramped up the 2nd half to around 110. I'm excluding the 2 outliers, South Carolina and his last start against Arkansas. I think we see him go 8 or even a complete game in his next 2 starts. Omaha, I can see them not extending him if we have game 1 in hand, so they can use him later in the tournament. That's a lot of looking ahead and making assumptions, I'm just thinking of the overall game plan for him going forward.
