Is the strike zone shrinking a myth or fact?

Need the Myth Busters to determine this .

It's a fact. The announcers have been talking g about it for a while. It's an emphasis by the SEC. I still haven't heard a reason for it, though.

Reasoning is umpires scared of bad “grades.” The SEC has implemented a system where they grade umpires, and as a result, umpires are using a tighter strike zone to prevent calling strikes on pitches that should be balls. The side effect to that is now you have some strikes being called balls.

They're now* using trackman to grade the umpires so the umpires have gotten tighter on their zones.

It's better for them to call a borderline strike a ball than to ring up a guy on an obvious ball.

A combination of the tighter zone and new ball makes what skenes is doing absolutely outstanding

Good post. That's how I understand things playing out as well.

It was shown also in the broadcast last night the trend upwards in ERA in the college game. That Skenes is doing what he's doing in this era is even more impressive.

His control and command are amazing with the power he has. The talk of him making a 40-man roster this year is incredible but plausible.

If he goes 1-1 to the pirates and they're in the thick of the playoff hunt like it looks like he could be pitching in crucial playoff moments in the mlb this year.

Was pretty liberal last night. He is untouchable when it’s like that

Here is a point that hasn’t been discussed much. LSU pitching might start shining in the NCAA tournament when we start seeing umps who are not being compared to a computer.

Announcers said last night that (only) 94% of strikes are being called strikes this year in SEC play. No clue how that compares historically tho.

Anecdotally it feels like SEC umps are squeezing tho. Which makes what skenes is doing even more impressive

SECs the only conference tracking and judging their officials w/ trackman this year.

I would assume it’s a way to artificially boost the offensive production

My friend is a college umpire and the track man technology is used to grade them and it's led to tighter zones that mimic mlb zones.

Or our hitters rack up a bunch of strikeouts looking.

Skenes reminds me of a cross between Nolan Ryan and Greg Maddux.
