Good USA Today article on why trash talk in title game was good for women’s sports

USA Today
quote:
Half the people who watched the national championship game were furious with the officials, while the other half was incensed an athlete had the audacity to talk trash. If you want the surest sign yet that women’s basketball has arrived, there you go. For too long, women’s basketball – all of women’s sports, really – has struggled for air in the national conversation. There are all kinds of reasons why, and that’s a debate for another day. But for several decades, the score of LSU’s 102-85 win over Iowa on Saturday would have been noted, maybe the fact it was the Tigers’ first national title, and that would have been about it.
quote:
Now the women are getting the same kind of treatment the men get, with every detail parsed over and picked apart. Did Angel Reese really diss Caitlin Clark? Or was she mimicking what the Iowa star did just last week? Was this game part of an on-the-job training program for officials? Or did they really think the sold-out crowd and millions more watching at home were there to see them?
quote:
Yes, some of the debates went too far. First, Google "Clark and John Cena," or Reese and ring things, and then calm down. Second, if you are outraged at LSU players boasting about their title and it coming at the expense of America’s new favorite player, you’re going to be horrified when I tell you about a guy named Michael Jordan. Or Aaron Rodgers.

Or Larry Bird. Or Tom Brady. Or Kobe Bryant.

Truly the king of trash talk. Except is it trash talk when you back it up?

Literally this part is the most accurate part of all. shite Tom Brady is one of the most extreme trash talkers to every play. Psycho Tom is and always was a thing and the media loved it. The fact everyone is hating on LSU and Angel Reese for doing exactly that is just infuriating. But who cares we won. Keep those receipts for next season and go win it all again with a better roster.

i don’t have a journalism degree and could’ve told you that. We’re talking about women’s basketball.

Or Jimmy Connors or Nick Kyrgios or the king of tennis trash talk, John McEnroe.

Told us what? That having the trash talk scrutinized would bring publicity to the game, and in the long run, help it?

On YouTube there a lot of videos with players describing how much trash Larry Bird talked. A lot of great stories. But like they all said he could back it all up.

all this gatekeeping of what class is and isn't is hilarious to me.

I think what Mulkey and Stacey at South Carolina realize is, sure you can win lots of game with girls who play with great fundamentals and are mild mannered, but to win championships, you might have to get some girls who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks and had to scrap through life.
Mulkey said as much in her post game interview when saying,” most coaches shy away from players with personalities, but I love them. I played with personally!”

Reese backed it up in the NCG.
Clark backed it up in the tournament overall.
I'm good.
GEAUX TIGERS!

The debate hasn’t been about trash talk “in the title game”. The debate is “after the game” rubbing it in your opponents face.
Reese would not have done it to South Carolina’s bigs because they likely would have brawled on the court.
It’s just where we are as a society now and we are on a slippery slope.
Glad the Tigers won, though.

Nope, go find what Miller said about Bird. He basically said I learned how to trash talk from LB.
