Is there a reason men's Basketball can't contend consistently?

I was a WW fan for sure, he brought energy and tourney appearances.
I am behind McMahon. I'll give him a chance, and time to incorporate his operation.
Real deal, however, this is LSU. We can recruit, if it is a priority.
There is no reason we shouldn't contend in basketball. Is it lack of interest from the institution?
Do we have to wait out possible NCAA punishment?
I believe we should and can be contenders.

Zero investment on any level from the administration. It’s truly bizarre but LSU doesn’t care about it’s basketball program.

It boggles my mind, but I agree with you.
We could be right there with Alabama or UT, etc, EASILY, if admin gave AF.

It’s shameful bordering on suspect. If not for the TV money this program is being run like a mid major in terms of investment.

Probably because we fired the coach who had us consistently contending for the first time in 30 years. Who would want to come to a place where the administration doesn't support the program and treats it as a lower tier program

I get why we fired WW.
I was a fan and I loved what he did for the program.
He's gone. Period.
I liked the MM hire and I am behind him, for now.
I need the admin to make mens BB a priority.
NO QUESTION we could compete with BAMA and TENN and UK if we wanted to.
Why don't we?

LSU is a football school
Baseball 2nd, and distant

Even when we are decent at basketball the majority of lsu atheletics supporters neither notice or care.

Sorry

Agree but that doesn’t mean basketball has to be dead. Go to a women’s game. People support.

Dale Brown had the pmac lite for like 15 years then a few not so good. So 79-97. The NCAA killed the program. They hated Brown.

Enter a very cheap Jon Brady. Losing season but crazy enough Brady got them rolling in a way. Had two great seasons and several great players but was very inconsistent(go back to very cheap Jon Brady). Lsu got tired of the inconsistency. Gone. 96-2008. 12 years.

here is the rub. Now enter the Alleva vs collis temple coaching hires

. Alleva hire Trent Johnson. Great coach but horrendous recruiter. Could not compete in sec with those players. Lsu “basketball” fans WILL show up to watch good basketball talent. 2008-12. One great team

Collis temple hire. “We want our own”. Enter Jonnie Jones. This is a reverse hire. Can supposedly recruit but doesn’t know a basketball is round. Great talent but bad teams. Then really bad teams. 12-17.

Then Alleva said. Back to my turn and he did. Will Wade. Young aggressive hard recruiter. As I said lsu basketball fans show up to watch talent. He had that. Pmac was fun. When it came to sec tourney or ncaa it was noticeable that wade lacked coach vs coach stamina but his recruiting was getting better and better. Then blast from past “Dale Brown” ncaa hated him. Killed it.

Saying all that I a, saying the recent past has put lsu basketball where it is. Incompetent coaching for 10 years, like really bad followed by firing a coach that had excitement back after 5 years to then hit the reset button hard.

All Lsu needs is the right coach. Here is a non lsu endorsement of MM LINK

Hopefully the pmac renovations are real and happen soon. Go look at Georgia techs arena. Pmac will be that. Same firm.

It doesn’t matter how many times it is said but ‘LSU needed this year to be like this’

Now we can get back to business.

It’s like the first ‘3 & out’ crowd that wants the QBs, HCs, & OCs head. Can’t see past a play, let alone a ‘make it right again’ year.

I think LSU can...This season is a little brutal and your coming off relative success with WW...Saying that M will get another year but he needs improvement next season...And the record may be the same but you want to see improvement in players and to me the glaring weakness is scoring...If you cannot make shots you are not going to win any games...You need basic fundamentals of shooting drills and nothing else...I heard the commentator say he watched practice and MM was working them...Well perhaps shooting should be everyday and nothing else...Try to fix one glaring weakness ...

When you say "contend" do you mean "be better than Dale Brown" or "make the tournament"? Those seemed to be the overwhelming barometers for our last coach.

We hired a coach who gave us a few good years but tanked the program in the process. Now we have to wait out sanctions and rebuild from scratch.

If bama can have success in mbb, there’s no reason why lsu can’t be just as good. No fanbase is more obsessed with football than bama, and yet they are competing at a high level in mbb. They have far less history in basketball than lsu. It’s all a matter of making a commitment to be successful from the administration.

I truly feel as if this is true however I’ve not been able to find a quantitative figure for basketball investment by SEC schools. Anyone have something more than just coaching salary?

"Probably because we fired the coach who had us consistently contending for the first time in 30 years. Who would want to come to a place where the administration doesn't support the program and treats it as a lower tier program"

Yet people on here complain about the hiring of MM and the lack of talent. Why don't these people just give it a couple of years and if we are in the same place then I'm sure there will be a change. He got what he could get under the circumstances . Any one who thinks he should have gotten top tier talent last year is clueless. Who knew Adam Miller was this bad. That is a Wade recruit by the way. I do believe he should be playing Ward more at some point. The difference in the TENN game was 19 turnovers and 20% shooting from 3. That's all on your guards. We do not have SEC guards.
