We (LSU) Should Honor Mike Williams (#29) This Season

50 years ago he became the first black player to play for us ('72-'74). Made several all-American teams his senior season and went onto have good NFL career (mostly) with the Chargers.
One of the least woke alums you could find but this should be done. Put #29 on our jerseys or in the EZs or something.
And while we're trying to do something honorable, restore Troy Middleton's name to the library and formally apologize for turning TS's lights into fentanyl Floyd's HS colors (pinnacle of stupidity).

quote:LSU says Lora Hinton was the first black player at LSU but I think that is because he technically signed first. Both guys are great ambassadors for LSU.

Hinton, Williams blazed trail for LSU football
Pioneers have remained loyal to LSU since their playing days (advocate article)

If your intent is truly to single out Mike Williams, you didn't need all that shite, it distracts from the main point.

It clarifies the main point. Things aren't happening in a vacuum. The other stuff is needed lest someone confuse this as but another chapter in the misguided annals of social justice. It's not. It's actually something worthy and honorable and should happen regardless of all the events of the last 2-5 years.
ETA: Hinton was the first signee, hence "player;" but because of injury Mike Williams was the first to play in '72.

No it doesn't except to people who automatically assume everything celebrating any black person is simply because of wokeism.
Antiwokes are almost as bad as wokes. Just quit talking about it on every single topic.

I don't disagree with this. Mike was a damn good player.
Yep.

I believe Mike Williams was from Covington. He was a great DB for LSU. He saved a game vs Florida by running down Nat Moore and Tackling him at the 1 yard line on a soaking wet field in Gainesville on what I think was the last play of the game.
Nat Moore was very fast.
Nat Moore was very fast.

Mike Williams is a Covington guy...an incredible athlete. All American, played in the league for 8-9 years...his hawking down of Nat Moore was classic. Nat Moore said "I didn't know Mike Williams was that fast" to which Mike replied, "I didn't know Nat was that slow"...

How about LSU just play good football and leave all the political/posturing alone.
Let sports just be sports again and enough with any kind of statement stuff
If you wanna honor Mike Williams honor him for being a good player/great player and that’s it

A very underrated play in LSU football history, and 1 of the best CB's LSU has had. Played many years in NFL without giving up a TD

OP is an idiot, but agree Williams should be recognized during a game this season at TS.

This is the TD equivalent of bragging about your black friend to mask your own overt racism.

3 stops by the Tiger D led to Floida's FG in the 3-3 tie, if my memory is correct

This thread really took a turn.

Does anybody have a valid mailing address for Williams? I have a photo of him I’d like him to sign.

Williams ran down Moore in the second quarter of the 1972 game. Tackled him at the LSU 1 and Florida fumbled on the next play. Crazy, rainy game -- Florida had five turnovers and LSU missed five field goals including two in the last 30 seconds. After Florida tied the game 3-3 with two minutes left, LSU got close enough for Juan Roca to try a 37-yard field goal. It was blocked, but officials ruled LSU recovered the ball after Florida had touched it following the block. This time, Roca's kick from 32 yards was wide left and the game ended in a tie.

Naming buildings after people is one of the worst traditions in academics. Why do you care. Unless Middleton personally funded the library why should his name be on a building? Who the frick cares

El Gato, thanks for the refresher. I was 16 at the time in Bogalusa with a couple of Knuckleheads drinking a few Dixie’s.
It’s been a long time. Lol.

I get to visit with Mike once a month or so. He lives several blocks from me.
"It was preseason and the Chargers were playing the Rams. Since it was preseason, my wife didn't make the trip to L.A., so after the game I headed to the Rams' locker room to see Isaiah." (Robertson - neighborhood friend of Mike's. Isaiah was an NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and highest paid linebacker in the 70's).
"Isaiah ask me if I wanted to go out … with the Rams QB … Joe Namath" (in the twilight of his career). "Doesn't matter who you are in the NFL, going out partying with Joe Namath is HUGE."
"I step into the parking lot outside the stadium and there is a big, long, limousine. In the back seat are three gorgeous blondes." (Here, Mike rubs his hands together with a wry smile and says "this is gonna be fun.")
As he steps into the back of the car a hand from behind firmly grabs his shoulder and gives a pull: His wife HAD come to the game, ''Where do you think you're going?"
Mike replied (with a huge smile on his face as he tells the story), "I only wanted to see the car."
