Since Tulane and Sewanee aren't viable. That would have been a meaningful move, and they're as good as Mizzou athletically and better academically.

Should've left that 14th spot open and kept the seat nice and warm until VT finally came to their senses. I'm not sure why Slive thought he had to run out and grab the first school willing (or desperate in MU's case) to make the move. VT makes since from an economical, cultural, geographical, and political standpoint. Mizzou fits non of these. They water down the conference as another run of the mill team.

GT or Clemson are great, but Georgia and South Carolina would not approve.

I've lost much respect for the SEC, just doesn't hold the same weight anymore. aTm was an acceptable addition, but Mizzou is a disaster.

If they wanted in the best conference, they should've stayed in. Too bad.

This.
What exactly was their reason for leaving?

Bottom line is that Bobby Dodd and Bear Bryant were locked in a bitter feud. GT wanted out of the SEC and went Independent.

In all honestly, GT is a better fit in the ACC. It's not just the academic requirements, it is the limited majors that an athlete can choose from. Most of the majors at Georgia Tech are engineering or associated with science and technology. No communication, history, or sports broadcasting majors.

In response to why GT left the SEC, this is from Wikipedia -

Dodd's tenure included Georgia Tech's withdrawal from the Southeastern Conference. The initial spark for Dodd's withdrawal was a historic feud with Alabama Crimson Tide Coach Bear Bryant. The feud began when Tech was visiting the Tide at Denny Stadium in 1961. After a Tech punt, Alabama fair-caught the ball. Chick Granning of Tech was playing coverage and relaxed after the signal for the fair catch. Darwin Holt of Alabama continued play and smashed his elbow into Granning's face causing severe fracturing in his face, a broken nose, and blood-filled sinuses. Granning was knocked unconscious and suffered a severe concussion, the result of which left him unable to play football ever again. Dodd sent Bryant a letter asking Bryant to suspend Holt after game film indicated Holt had intentionally injured Granning. Bryant never suspended Holt. The lack of discipline infuriated Dodd and sparked Dodd's interest in withdrawing from the SEC.

Another issue of concern for Dodd was Alabama's and other SEC schools' over-recruitment of players. Universities would recruit more players than they had roster space for. During the summer practice sessions, the teams in question would cut the players well after signing day thus preventing the cut players from finding new colleges to play for. Dodd appealed the SEC administration to punish the "tryout camps" of his fellow SEC members but the SEC did not. Finally, Dodd withdrew Georgia Tech from the SEC in 1963

I'm 60 years old and I remember as a kid, Bama and GT had the best rivalry in the South. That rivalry back in those days are comparable to the Ohio State/Michigan rivalry back then and today. You have to know that back in the fifties and early sixties, Bama and Auburn didn't play that often. Bryant and Dodd screwed GT. Tech's home gams have never reached the level that they were while in the SEC. The ACC is nothing but a revamped Big East. Bowden screwed FSU by taking the chicken shite option by declaring that he didn't want FSU to play Bama and Auburn in the same season. Hey Tech and FSU fans, how many of ya'll are going up to Pitt and New York every two years? Lord, I hope that the SEC stays regional.

Bear Bryant left Bobby Dodd hanging. The top SEC schools had a ridiculous number of players on scholarship and the SEC presidents decided to set an instant cap at 140 scholarships which would require scholarships to be taken away from players already on the rosters. Bobby was already pissed off at the SEC for other reasons and said he would not tell any of his players that he would take away a scholarship. Bear Bryant agreed to have his back at a time when what Bama says goes. During the meeting, Bear didn't show up and the Bama rep voted in favor of the cap. Dodd was pissed and decided that GT's best interest would be to leave the SEC. Bear Bryant had tried to get Dodd to rejoin but failed.

no one knows what deals are going on under the table *wink wink*

VT might be the 15th member just waiting until later on to expand and take a 15th and 16th team.

anyone not thinking that the conferences all are eventually going to 16 teams is drinking some good arse kool-aid.

VT=15
NC State=16 (they suck but brings in the north carolina markets.

basically this would bring in all the original southern states during the 1800's

Adding Ga Tech doesn't add a new TV market. This is all about increasing the footprint and $$$$

I would love to have Va Tech. But I think that it is obvious that Va Tech and Ga Tech do not want to join. Beamer is another Papa Bowden and doesn't want any part of the SEC. As long as he is at Va Tech I don't believe that they join.

This is all the Virginia Governor's fault. The ACC was all set to take Miami, Syracuse and BC in '03. But the Va. Gov stepped in and insisted they take Va Tech instead.

If he hadn't, this would be a slam dunk.
