I think he could not be farther from the truth, but I do not have a billion dollars either.

quote:I fully agree with him (and you) on this. Super Conferences sound cool, progressive, "with it" or whatever you wanna call it. But there will be a price to be paid in terms of the kinds of things that make college football this nation's favorite non-professional game. Loss of a semi-rational bowl structure, schedule. Loss of regional rivalries, the annual renewals of which are the kinds of things we all grew up on - the occasional trips 1000+ miles away will not draw the fanbased crowds, gameday excitement will be diminished, etc. Yes some new traditions may be born, but at what cost? Cuban has raised some very important questions that have no present answer. But once the regional conference system has been maimed or killed, that's it. No going back.
HE makes a lot of sense.

Why does Mark Cuban GAF?
Because he's working on a BCS playoff solution.
Mark Cuban pays for Playoff Proposal
Superconferences change the power of his proposals and keep more control over everything with University Presidents and Conference Commissioners.
Always question motives. Question Mark Cuban on this issue.

Super conferences will fail, no doubt.

I'm not a supporter of expansion, but this is really weak brew:
1. More schools will NOT mean more TV money.
Do you really believe this? Consider CBS. They broadcast nationally televised games. Would't you think that more people in TX would be tuning in? ESPN/Fox is more complicated, but they are paying another conference money now. Why wouldn't at least some of that money flow to the SEC?
2. Fans will hate the scheduling impact
This is a valid argument because it will impact fans, but he does overplay it. We don't use a single network and ESPN has many channels. When a conf goes away, you know, they don't have any games to broadcast and that frees up space. Whoever has the more compelling games will get the best times.
3. Say Goodbye to Cupcake Football Games
Is Mark going to organize some sort of Farm Aid for these poor multi million dollar earners? Small school payouts are only impacted if the number of conference games is expanded, and maybe not then either if big time OOC games are avoided as a result.
4. Goodbye Geographic Rivalry Games
I really do believe that this is the strongest argument along with maintaining conference cohesion. It's why I believe that if you are going to expand, you should try to do so by maximizing market within the smallest possible footprint. For example, A&M and say TCU are both within 200 miles of the LA border in a state with 25MM. That monster that the PAC is creating will have a huge market, but it will be over half the US. Away game travel culture will surely change. Loss of conference cohesion can cause a lack of interest in half the conference which negatively impacts value.
5. Big Dogs Hate Becoming Little Dogs
I think this is silly, except for maybe TX. Competition is a good thing. I'm also convinced that long term the supers will have to go to 4 div to maintain cohesion by reducing the number of permanent games. The four divs create more winners/big dogs.

I too am not sold on the idea of the super conference, but I don't see why he says good bye to Cupcakes, if anything I think it would increase or at least stay the same. At most they will go from 8 to 9 conference games, that mean teams that play 5 road conference games will be looking for cupcakes so they have 7 home games.
It may well be good bye to games like LSU-Oregon, but not to LSU NWSU

For a billionaire, this clown sure seems clueless about cfb TV revenue. Stick with BB, Cuban. aTm to SEC is a done deal.

He's a smart guy but I don't agree with him at all.

Bovine anatomy fail. One thing A&M will bring to the table for the SEC is veterinarian dominance. Auburn will be their chief veterinary rival, but those are probably the two best vet schools in the country.

I think all of his arguments are cogent and accurate. I still want A&M, though. Damn the consequences, full speed ahead!

Frick Mark Cuban. He is an arsehole who produced a movie that fueled insurgents to kill more American soldiers. He has blood on his hands.
