Fort Worth Star Telegram: A&M Seeking a Stable Partnership

quote:

But commissioner Dan Beebe was so busy saving his job that he never fixed the problem.

Tommy Tuberville, of all people, warned us of the inevitable discord.

The Big 12's days were numbered, the Texas Tech coach told Rivals Radio back in June of 2010, because there was "too much disparity between all the teams."

For his candor, Tuberville was publicly reprimanded by Beebe. But he had spent 14 seasons coaching in the SEC, where network revenues are distributed equally, and Tuberville knew.

When Tuberville coached at Auburn, he knew that if hated rival Alabama received $1 more from the league office, Auburn fans would revolt.

Imagine a league where one school is about to receive $300 million more.

Don't blame A&M one bit for leaving. It would have been great to have A&M, Texas, OU and oSu in the PAC, but it's all going to turn out for the best now, I think.

Who's the other addition to the SEC for the East?

That's the big question now.

I wondered why in the world Tubs went to Lubbock in the first place.

A&M's athletic program was is so in debt ($16 million) it was borrowing millions from the schools general fund as recently as two years ago.

Not sure if that has been repaid or where it stands or if they still need to borrow.

Good column.

I had no idea the revenue disparity was THAT much to the Texas' advantage..

Welcome, Aggies.

This is a great addition to the SEC.

You would think other big twelve schools would want to come. What about Texas Tech? Could you imagine Tubbs back in the SEC?

actually thats not quite what happened. The athletic department already repaid that loan and turned quite a profit last year. the loan was to bump up the timetable on getting some facilities started instead of waiting for just donations.

If Tubbs had waited one more week before deciding on Tejas Tech, he'd have probably gotten the TN job.

Do you really know for sure? I can't imagine turning a profit one year after being forced to get a loan. I think aTm is living just like the federal government. Build it now on a loan and hope future contracts bail you out. In this case you're trying to borrow from the SEC.

They were interviewing some orangebloods guy on Chris Childers this morning. The smarmy fricker was acting like this chaos was A&Ms fault. That they were being unfair and selfish. Hilarious.

It has not. That is one reason tickets to our game with them are so high.

People A&M has a top 20 athletic department in revenue. The AD didn't ask for a loan. President Gates offered an interest free loan to speed up the process of facility upgrades which largely come from private donations and not revenue generated.

And FTR, an AD's goal isn't to be profitable. The money earned should almost entirely go back into the programs.
