if miles wouldn't commit to VK this early, then i assume there's no way he meet coach O's early deadline

chances that earl lane stays now?

O can't be the only one being considered...I think he goes to Tenn though. I thought Lane was the one who wanted to leave?

Is there some info stating VK's choice was made due to Miles not acting quickly?

naw the opposite. miles didn't want to commit this early and VK took the KSU job

i mean it could end up working out for miles, but this is a risky proposition

one of my friend swears that miles is just trying to ensure that his assistants get their bowl bonuses

I think Les will hire a DC and let the DC make changes to the position coaches. For Lane, I think it's up to the new DC and whether or not the DC brings his own guy in.

IMO, Miles is smart for not having his hand forced. He should be thorough as it seems his is- it's only probably the most important hire he's ever had to do in his coaching career and could affect the length of his time hear.

If he was 100% totally convinced VK was the guy, he would have offered. The fact that he wasn't is a good sign I think.

Be patient.

how many guys did miles pass on b/c he wasn't "100%" sold on, only to choose maleveto?

Yeah, that might not be the best way to handle the hiring process.

From everything I have read/heard, Miles was after 2 guys last year: Muschamp and Tenuta. He went after WM but he was dead set on going to Texas knowing he would be name Coach in Waiting. And the Tenuta interview didn't go well for whatever reason.

After that, Miles figured he could keep the same "scheme" and let Malleveto run it. He was very, very wrong.

But he did score big with the Pelini and Crowton hire and I think he will here too.

FWIW, I am not upset at all about the VK loss. I think Rhoads or Tenuta would both be better.

I assume Miles never wanted O to begin with. Lane is gone though.

there were other DCs miles could have gone after

hell miles knew he was in the market for a new DC long before just about any other team did

i'll say 50/50 combined b/w the 2 hires

I was extremely happy with Pelini from about midway in 2005 (after the UT debacle) until about midway through last year. I don't know what happened after the SC game last year, but that D was not the same.

As for Crowton- I think he outsmarts himself at times, but I also don't think he's had "his" QB yet. Jefferson is the first guy that you can tell he wanted and he had a hand in recruiting. He inherited both Flynn and Lee. I think in order to run his O you have to be mobile. Flynn ran it well but was hampered with the ankle injury.

i give bo p a lot of credit for 2005. during the UF game he was like, "frick it, let's blitz" and our D was transformed

2006 was just unbelievably sick in talent. most talented team in CFB

got too cute in 2007. safety play went down in a big way. got out schemed

i think notre dame was the game teams used to go against LSU

naw. that's only a very recent (about 2006 and on) development in his offense

I'll agree about the safety play. Losing Laron was bad but we still had Steltz. Losing Steltz really hurt this year.

What we need more than anything is a QB on the defensive side. We had that in Jack Hunt, Laron Landry, and Steltz. I'm wondering who (hopefully) is going to step up on the D next season and take control. Peterson? Riley? Sheppard?

I'm not one of these "Fire Les Miles" rantards, but if this truly was the case, he honestly should be fired based on that alone.

I don't feel that he should rush the decision of pickind a DC, but he also shouldn't pass on one he wants just to get his buddies paid.

I just don't think this is the case. Either he didn't want VK or vice versa. I just don't think a man with such a high profile job and so much riding on this one decision would do something so ignorant.

I think it's possible that Muschamp hung him out to dry last year.

He may have played Miles and Brown against each other to sweeten the deal.

I don't blame him. Miles did somewhat slap him in the face with his position coach offer when taking over.

i think that's possible about WM, but i think we just can't compete with UT

UT is pretty much THE spot. they have more money than anybody. austin has good climate. austin is the #1 college town in america. their facilities are top notch. the respect you get is prolly #1 (or real close). etc
