are you tracing the beginning of said "run" back to the start of Belotti's tenure?

Yes. The teams of the late 90s/early 2000s were some pretty good teams which eclipsed what Oregon had before. The "run" really began with Rich Brooks and the 95 Rose Bowl. That was the beginning of the next step. Then those Belotti teams were a bit better and top-10 several years. Then on to Chip Kelly when they were regularly top-10/top-5.

Oregon isn't like USC/Texas/Alabama/Florida/Ohio State, and others. It is a hard place to recruit, low population base, not much football tradition, etc. Californians want to move here but not a lot of football players want to come play here traditionally. Sustained success was necessary to keep moving "up" and keep talent coming in.

Fans really bought into PJ Fleck. If he was hired, they would have been ecstatic.

Our fan base sucks. I guess that's what happens when you become relevant in the millennial era.

Both schools he's coached had to be completely rebuilt(or in WKU's case, built) Mr. Brohm owes him a debt of gratitude for his quick success at WKU.

This. It's not like the guy showed up at Michigan and shat the bed. He took two run down programs and found a way to win. Left both better than he found them.

Same here. He brought WKU into Tiger Stadium in 2011 and they were the only visiting team that wasn't completely intimidated before the game even started.

I would have liked this hire as well. Taggart will do very well on the West Coast.

Mike MacIntyre had a record of 16-21 when he took over in Boulder. That's worked out pretty well.

So far. Give it time

This is no affirmative action hire. Taggart is a solid coach.

Smart hire For Oregon . I thought he was one of the top coaches not at a good power 5 program . Sucks for USF but if they could get Strong or Kiffin they should be able to keep improving. Both of those coaches would do a good job recruiting at USF.

USF alum and former season ticket holder here.

Taggart is a solid Coach. He inherited a bonafide dumpster fire when he arrived at USF. He recruited well considering that USF is likely the 4th choice for a prospect in FL.

That said, as the Big East crumbled and the AAC was formed I can't help but feel like his success was due in some part to the low level of competition we faced. He managed no championships during that time and lost some games he probably shouldn't have.

The players love him and he relates well to the fans. Hate to see him go but after the Big 12 elected not to expand the writing was on the wall that he'd leave.
