In the parts I saw Savage was a little better, but everyone knew their OL was going to be trash. Watson gives you a much better chance behind a bad OL vs a statue like Savage

on the same token, throwing Watson in with that kind of OL before they knew exactly what they had (and how to gameplan) could have been disastrous. people too often look at these things in a bubble (ie, Watson tore it up a few weeks later so he'd have done that week 1, too) but that's not how it works

situations matter. that's why so many players go to Cleveland and fail. that's why a lot of QBs bust, too

They lost JJ Watt and Deshaun Watson just as they started rolling this year.

He definitely gets a pass.

ETA:

And Rick Smith is bottom 5 GM in the league IMO. He needs to go before O'Brien.

They threw him in the second half of the first game so I don’t see how it was much different. If you’re ready to do that just start him IMO

That’s kind of my beef with O’Brien, he never seems to have a plan he’s willing to stick with at QB these last few years

based on preseason I don’t think it was a bad call starting Savage but it looks way worse with 20/20 hind sight after how inept Savage looked in the first half and how well Watson played later

o coach or play QB?

He’s OC in Philly presumably they are looking at him as HC. If they ever fall behind 35-3 maybe he can suit up

If they fire OB and keep Rick it will be extremely disappointing

Then be prepared to be disappointed, Smith has his head so far up McNair's arse that I can't see him getting fired anytime soon. Smith will just throw O'Brien under the bus like he did to his buddy Kubiak and claim the it was the coaching and not his inability to evaluate talent as the reason for the team being garbage.

Yep.

The problem is firing Rick would be McNair's job and they are butt buddies.

I know that, to us, Rick is inept. But McNair lives in a bubble and truly believes that Rick is a savant.

gotta give him a pass this year. Like their future with him coaching Watson.

My, perhaps naive, hope is that they could kick Smith upstairs, give him a new title and have direct control over personnel

Does Tom O'Brien leave Navy Radio to take a job? That is the O'Brien some school should go after.
