Most fans are complete idiots.
They talk down potentially great candidates when they are available to hire, and then turn around and expect them to leave good programs that were ballsy enough to take the chance on them a year or two down the line. Dan Lanning isn't good enough when he was the Georgia DC, but now they expect that you'll just call him up at Oregon and he is going to be interested in your opening. Its too late now. You snooze, you loose.
Oregon didn't need to hire Dan Lanning. Mario Cristobal was winning games there, and there was talent on the roster. They easily could have pulled some P4 head coach from another school with their money. Instead they took the calculated risk on an elite young candidate with huge upside, and they are being rewarded for it.
Ohio State didn't need to hand over their elite job to Ryan Day, who had only been an OC there for ~2-3 seasons. Ryan Day had never been a HC anywhere. Why take that "risk"? They are OHIO STATE! Ohio State is the same program that went to Division 2 and hired Jim Tressel, which ended up being a huge success. Again, they did their homework and found the best HC and didn't just derp themselves into believing that their program is too prestigious to take a chance on a less conventional hire.

As it is - hire literally anybody and if they do well, early, you're going to have to bump their pay up. However, if you overpay (see Brian Kelly) and they underperform, the only way to reduce salary is to let them run out the contract.
So, we are here. I would rather compete for salary for what Joe Brady or Kelvin Sheppard would expect than, say, a Lincoln Riley, Lane Kiffen, Dabo Swinney, etc. would command (and would be in a bidding war for). Sumrall would be somewhere between those 2 extremes and I would be okay with that - on paper.
As always, I will let it play out. I liked the Brian Kelly hire - I didn't love it - but I liked it. The last homerun hire was Saban. That might not ever happen again. A triple would be nice, though.

I'll tell you that some of the fanbase was pissed about this when it happened and there was a ton of hesitation. "Ohio State isn't a school where you learn to be a head coach". The world has changed. Look at some of the most successful programs and they have hired coaches that were not HCs at lower level schools like in the past

Day
Lanning
Venebles
Freeman
Riley
I'm sure there are tons more but Clemson/UGA/OSU/Oregon/OU/ND/USC are top level jobs and they took successful coordinators and made them their HCs without prior experience.

Agreed, if we’re taking a risk though, I’d much rather it be on an up and coming coordinator in P5 though rather than G5.
Way more P5 coordinators pan out than G5 guys

Troy whupped that LSU arse last time we played.
Let me chime in here from what I know from sipping Bourbon with the man. Jon Sumrall lives by the extreme ownership principles. He reads and is constantly trying to improve. When he was an assistant at Troy, he would tailgate with the fans for a short while after the Trojan Walk. He was accessible and all in.
When he got the HC job at Troy, our QB Gunnar Watson was fat and couldn’t do a single pullup. He turned him into one of the best we had.
With Sumrall, you will get a team that is beyond in shape. Rusty Whitt will make camps as hard as special forces training. This means your team will play at a high level all game long. Nobody will out work your team.
He plays smart football. Your DBs will not intercept a ball at the one yard line on a 4th and 30 play. They will know the game.
Talent will be elite and I’m not talking about star rating. Sumrall can evaluate a player and get you that All American nobody saw.
He has that IT factor and whoever hires him will win a natty. He might even get one at Tulane.
Where will he go? Jon believes in God, Family, and Country in that order. Ginny doesn’t like to move and so that means he will respect her wishes before any coaching offers. Alabama is one place he would go to be closer to Huntsville. LSU is somewhere he would go because the kids could stay in school. The man would live in New Orleans and commute to work every day at LSU if his kids wanted to stay where they are.
Whoever offers him this year and someone big will offer, they better convince Ginny.

The thing is, it hasn't even changed! Its always been that way.
Bob Stoops was Spurrier's DC at Florida from 1996-1998 before Oklahoma gave him the HC job in 1999. He had never been a HC anywhere before that. That was 26 years ago.
Oklahoma has actually hired 3 straight coordinators: Bob Stoops, Lincoln Riley, Brent Venables. None of them had ANY prior head coaching experience when they were hired as HC.
