Oh we knew there were problems for several months, but we didn't know our division was going to be affected (i.e. completely shut down) until two weeks ago.

Not that I can shed any light on the economics of the Lehman Brothers situation, but FWIW I am employed by Lehman in one of their subsidaries and I am being layed off next week. It literally came out of no where about two and a half weeks ago. The whole mortgage lending crisis did them in.

Fedora OFFICIALLY to Southern Miss

Just announced in a press conference.
I don't know if this is good or bad. I just hope we improve under him.

Fedora from Oklahoma State got the job!!
Not so much. He was in town to interview on Friday. Per the Hattiesburg American no one has been offered the job. But Fedora does seem to be a front runner.

Myself and other USM alums weren't happy with the way Bower was shoved out the door, so anything less than an immediate improvement probably won't go over well.
Guess it depends on your circle of alumni friends. Myself and everyone I know was ready for this to happen two seasons ago.

Hmmm...Cornholer says it's a leverage tool for salary. Ya think?!?!
It was a topic on Around the Horn and Jim Rome and every other show on ESPN today. They'll say he's absolutely going and he would be a fool not to go.
Same thing everyone is saying.

Meh, probably not bad enough to decline the opportunity to take a HC position. Might be a good stepping stone for him.
And if he isn't interested, I'm sure plenty of others would take the opportunity to become a HC at a mid major.

Negative. Now being reported in Hattiesburg that this is false.
Per the Hattiesburg American, Nix has only interviewed for the job. There is a list of potentials at the end of this article

I'm an alumni...my husband is an alumni...Anastasia Beaverhausen is an alumni...and everyone we know is quite happy with the decision. Ultimately, though, the paltry alum like us don't matter. This was the year that the big donors finally stepped up and said "Hey, we've got the money...make this happen" and it did.

Tyrone Nix? Especially if Spurrier comes to LSU.
re: Who is more delusional, Southern Miss or Bama?

I don't think it's anything personal against UCF; they are a decent program and certainly a good addition to the conference. More to the point, it's the expectation of beating conference opponents consistently, like we used to. The only losses we used to have were to big program teams (Nebraska, Alabama, etc).

What is everyone's hang-up with Bower? If he's so great, why doesn't anyone mention him for the LSU job?
Exactly. I don't see any of these folks passing judgement on his firing bringing him up for their open positions. I think the message is that we, as Southern Miss fans, should be happy with mediocrity, but other schools (SEC especially) can expect a conference championship every year with a big bowl game.
Apparently, we should be tickled pink with a 7-5 season and the papajohns.com bowl.

As a Southern Miss alum born and raised in Hattiesburg, I couldn't agree with you more. It's easy for people who've not followed Southern Miss football or supported their program to say this is a dumb decision. I say "What took so long?".
I don't think Southern Miss is delusional at all, and I think Anastasia Beaverhausen summed it up perfectly.
Go Eagles!

re: Why in the world did Southern Miss fire Bower?????
Posted by skc4lsu on 11/26/07 at 7:22 pm to Anastasia Beaverhousen
The game of college football is no longer just a game; it's a business. And unfortunately being a "good man" doesn't win games or garner loyalty from fans. If you want to be regarded for being a "good man", you should be a preacher. If you want to be regarded as a coach worth keeping, win the games that matter (even ocassionally) and the games that don't all the time.

I think the point of all this discussion is this: Southern Miss fans were pretty damn happy in the late 90's when we were consistently dominating CUSA. I don't think anyone (or at least very few folks) really believe or expect Southern Miss to be a LSU, Ohio State, etc. But what I expect - and think most other fans think - is that if you're going to be in a sub-par conference, you should at least dominate. It's like, if you gotta be in a boobie conference, you should at least expect to own all the other boobs. We haven't done that in years.
Personally, I think this change has been needed for a while; and while I do think Bower is a good man, I think all parties are better served with his departure.
As we sat in MM Roberts stadium Saturday afternoon and observed all the changes that have been made/are being made, we discussed that we felt we had all the ingredients for a great program....minus a team that could step it up to the next level. Staduim/field looks awesome; new athletic field house is great. I think in a few years we will have the team and coaches to match the rest of the improvements.
To the assclowns on here that say we shouldn't expect anything more than a 7-5 season, I say would y'all not have been putting "For Sale" signs in his year 10 seasons ago? One loss for a LSU coach and everyone is up in arms about how it's a sign of the apocolypse and the coaches need to be fired. Don't believe me? Go to the Rant. Just because we're not a national powerhouse doesn't mean we can't aspire to be. :doublebird:
To Bower I say thanks for the work and dedication, and I wish you all the best.
Now, bring on a new era in Southern Miss football! SMTTT!
