re: Why did Florida pay so much for Napier?

Napier didn't have interest from any other program. He was lobbying hard with his agent but he was only in play for Florida which makes it even more odd why he got the offer he got.

If you spend a lot of money on a coach, it makes the coach better.

We could have haggled with Napier in his buyout because of the Rashada fiasco but given the optics it was best to pay his full buyout. It was the correct choice for Stricklin to make.

The original contract wasn’t ideal, but the extension he got was terrible.

Did we extend him? I thought he was on his original 7 year deal.
Honestly, the contract wasn't awful. $7 million wasn't crazy for an SEC head coach. I think the bigger issue though was Scott lead the search himself. And then did all negotiations with only the assistance of UF's legal team. Which lead to the big issue with the contract, which was the buyout. There was no offset language, which is absolutely nuts.
It seems like we are doing the right thing with retaining Turnkey ZRG for this search. They should be turning over every stone for candidates, assisting with negotiations, and helping with the transition. They have a great track record including getting Golden for UF basketball, Elko to A&M and Lane to Ole Miss.

I personally think Napier wanted to be here and was hoping they called him.
I know, the locals hate Moscona but when Napier was on his show before Bk to LSU and him to FL.... you could hear it in his voice. He was begging for a call from LSU and honestly, he would likely still be the LSU HC.

There's no "thinking" about it. He ABSOLUTELY wanted the LSU job and openly campaigned for it. There has never been a time, before or since, that BR sports radio had a weekly appearance by ULL's head coach. His representation tried to take the same campaign approach Orgeron did to help land the LSU job.
LSU was never interested.
Still, he's reps undoubtedly pushed that LSU was interested in order to leverage Florida.
"Insiders" run to this board with every bit of inside information they have. Much of it is BS purposely fed by agents to those "sources" to create leverage. Often times for the coach to get a new deal at his current school.

Matt said after the fact Napier's reps were the ones who set up the appearances. It was very transparent to anyone with a small ability to look beyond surface level that Napier was pushing hard for the LSU.

Eric Morris, who is currently making about $1.5Mil, and offer him $4.5Mil? That’s tripling his salary, you’d think he’d take it.
Morris should be high on the list. IMO, he is the college football version of Will Wade.

I agree. He’s not even on some of the top 10 candidates lists for LSU either. Not that those lists mean anything.
Hopefully he’s being considered, might be a Jay Johnson type where no one is talking about him but he’s the guy.
