Penn State will frick up the hire, realize they made a mistake 3-4 years later, then make a better choice the next time around.

I agree with this. Whoever follows JoePa will inherit a no win situation. Look at Les following Saban, Smoke Laval following Skip Bertman, Zook following Spurrier, Jimbo in about five years, Rich Rodriguez after Carr, Kiffin in about a year, every quarterback who followed Marino and Elway. It's hard to follow someone the fans adore and be well liked. PSU will have to have that palet clensing coach.

I disagree. PSU situation is completely different than these schools. These coaches left at the top of their game. Paterno's a legend but how much coaching is he really doing anymore? I think most PSU fans will be excited to start fresh when he decides to move on.

i've thought this too, but wouldn't that mean they would lean for an in-house hire? that wouldn't be a fresh start.

I don't think they could go wrong with Pat Fitzgerald, as someone mentioned earlier. He'd be a great fit. He's a wildcat to the bone and it'd be hard to get him to leave NU, in my opinion.

Rutgers could improve dramatically - within their limited range, of course - but unless they do, I can't see Schiano getting an opportunity at Penn State, or any other major program. In retrospect, he should have taken advantage of his opportunities to go elsewhere when he could have; Rutgers is trending in the wrong direction, IMO.
I would imagine Al Golden is the odds on favorite. He's already familiar with the recruiting area, he's shown he can win with inferior talent and he's from Penn State.
