My guess is that is what Patterson has been doing since the day he arrived. Probably talking to 2 or 3 possible candidates for weeks now.
Texass will not admit to speaking with anyone because of the perception that they got rejected if it didn't result in a hire.
Not entirely certain they are united in pursuit of Saban. Might be a couple of big money guys pushing for Saban. Probably somewhat divided as to who to go after. Paying $10M to ANY coach has a certain amount of baggage and PR damage.

The fact that there really isn't anyone else says even more.

Patterson will not pick the next coach. That's not how shite works. At best he'll have input. At worst he'll be a complete bystander.
It's a total mess over there and no one really knows who is in charge even, with some of the BORs trying to sink their own president (Powers). It's why the rumors are out of control. Dodds has run that place so long that with his departure there's a massive power vacuum. Even some BMDs are being shut out. People think they know shite but no one even knows who is honestly calling the shots.
One thing for sure though is several boosters are totally off the reservation and negotiating on their own, completely bypassing Powers, the AD, and the BORs. No idea how it will end but it's clearly a power struggle on multiple levels and it's getting ugly

Because all the smart deals are done in full view.

IMO, if Saban doesn't go to Texas then Mack Brown remains the coach for now. The guy righted the ship after firing one of his coaches and was a win away from a Big 12 Championship and a BCS bowl. I think the only reason he steps down or gets forced out immediately is if better coach comes in, which there are very few. I think Mack Brown is willing to step down if Saban comes because he knows that is best for the program and he can still help run things from behind the curtains with the big wigs.
I 100% agree.
