While he’s not my first choice, I definitely prefer Kelly over Jimbo

Hiring Jimbo would’ve been terrible, so I’m very happy that it ended up Kelly over Scott’s BFF at atm.

You should prefer just about everyone over Jimbo. He’s a joke.

My only problem with the hire is his age. He’s a great coach. I prefer this hire to Riley or Jimbo by a lot. I don’t have a name that I would have preferred, but someone like Napier, assuming he survived due diligence, was what I had in mind.

I agree there. Saturday was proof that Jimbo is overrated.

Might as rehire Orgeron instead of hiring Jimbo. He couldn’t beat our 3rd stringers and shite coaching staff

With his pursuit of both Jimbo and Kelly, it's clear that Woodward was trying to hire an experienced, proven winner. Kelly doesn't have a NC but he checks all the boxes. I agree that Jimbo has lost some of his luster but Jimbo and Kelly are similar kinds of coaches. You hire either of them hoping that they will establish a culture of excellence and consistent winning. At this point in their careers, Kelly is superior.

Honestly though, I understand Jimbo has a title, but Kelly is the better coach. He has had to build his programs everywhere he went, Jimbo walked into Florida State that was on a lull, and he won a championship, then proceeded to leave it in a worse place than when he got there.

Right. If having a ring is everything, then Gene Chizik or Miles are available. Or keep O.

Kelly is a better coach, but Jimbo is recruiting at the highest level the past few years, especially this year.

Jimbo, stay at aTm, thanks...

There are only 3 active college coaches with rings besides the GOAT - Dabo, Jimbo and Mack. Kelly is a far better hire than at least 2 of those unless Urban could have been lured back.

Chances of anyone staying in one spot, successful or not, for 5 plus years is pretty slim anyway. Even if Kelly makes it another 5-7 years that’s a win for the program. He should bring stability to the roster and the program and elevate the offensive line play. And the idea of replacing a retiring coach is a lot better than the idea of replacing a fired coach.

Napier posed way more risk and TBH doesn’t have this unlimited ceiling either because where he excels is more easily found. There will be another Napier if this flops for whatever reason

It's kind of a double edge sword. With his age you are probably looking at 10 years at best, but you also know he won't be looking at LSU as a stepping stone to the NFL.

Napier seems like a college guy, but you'll always wonder if he's considering the next steps or looking for a long-term spot. The package USC gave Riley may keep him from taking that next step, but I would not be surprised if he doesn't consider the NFL in the near future.
