I was having a discussion on a UGA board about this. Some felt that Vandy was better because they have lower expectations and getting to 6 wins would be easier and look better than getting USC to 8 wins. I'm of the opinion that USC is the better job because they'll actually invest in the program.

USCe because it just has more resources.

Vandy - high education to sell and lower standards to meet

That was my thought too. Plus we’ve seen good coaches go in and be successful.

But outside of Franklin who has been able to have success and jump to a better job?

We've seen 1 coach go in and be successful for a couple seasons, unless you want to go back to the 1910s when Vanderbilt was winning the SIAA.

I'm guessing this is a troll thread.

ETA: I forgot about Gerry DiNardo. He jumped to LSU from Vandy.

You eventually show your true colors as a coach no matter the school. For Vandy, just have to show marginal improvement, good game management, etc. I think you could get noticed.

Hell it isn't even like Vandy is in the SEC based on that low bar. No body is expecting 10-2. Beat some of the other East bottom feeders and the West's non-productive teams and you can amass some wins.

After a couple years of turn around you could pull a Franklin.

All this to compare to USCe. So much respect for the ole ball coach in his time there.

I buy this argument when its middle of the road to top level teams. When you discussing low level teams like Vandy, I think of high school - also not a lot of resources. Got to get players that fit the system that you can get the most out of to play as a unit, cause really in the end, that is how you win or lose.

I hear you but how many coaches have gone to that black hole of Vandy and then never gone to be a head coach at a better school? Dinardo and Franklin. Anyone else?

SC is a better job and it’s not even a question.

But Vandy has more upside career wise for lack of a better way to say it. You do ok at Vandy and people notice.

Carolina gets Aggie and Clemson every year while Vandy gets State and other academics. The Dores usually play four winnable OOC games - it can be a better job just because of the schedule.

Vandy may be better. At SCAR you got expectations to win, and you have to compete with some juggernauts at Clemson, Georgia and Florida. At Vandy, you’re at a hard place to win, so you get some benefit of the doubt and it has a high upside if you do well there.

Vandy by a Mile. You can sell elite education to recruits, no expectations, you can easily use it as a stepping stone to a top 10 job there. USCe is one of the worste jobs in the nation. High expectations, small recruiting base, huge competition for talent and zero pedigree for winning. USCe is essentially a death sentence for a coach, where as Vandy is springboard.

Let’s be honest, in the FBS pecking order, Vanderbilt is behind at least 2 other schools in that state. They also aren’t swinging the biggest dick in their own city.

Our big 3 sports have been trash for the last half decade and our fan support is at an all-time low and we are still in the top 20 in revenue for overall AD.

There are two schools in the East and 4ish in the West that are better jobs than ours. Vandy ain’t one of them.

USCe. They've at least won the division. Their overall records are similar, though. Vandy is .428, USCe is .0508.

Vandy without a doubt. Look how long they have kept the coach who came after their most successful coach ever! Any other shitty program would have become entitled under Franklin, but nope they kept a Vandy level expectation for the next guy.

No one else does that in the SEC. It is a special job.

Gerry DiNardo and James Franklin come to mind.

Those are the only two anyone can think of. And Gerry was 25 years ago.
