What was their last job before now?

So looking at the CFP last year

4 DC: Smart, Lanning, Freeman, Daniels (Boise St)

4 OCs: Dillingham, Sark, Day, Lashlee

1 PFHC: Franklin

2 G5 HC: Cig and Heupel

1 P5 Position Coach: Dabo

The Current Top25 is
4 OCs
7 DCs
6 P5 HCs
5 G5 HCs
3 Position Coaches (all promoted from
within 2 as interim)

Now you’re probably thinking, that’s a lot of DCs.

of the coaches who were hired from other HCing jobs, (11 total)
7/11 were OCs 1/11 was a DC 1/11 was a Position Coach and 2 are oldguys that got a HCing jobs at JUCO or DIII schools and just worked their way up over 15-20 years (Cig and Fritz)

So, 11 were at one point OCs, 8 were DCs and 6 were never a coordinator.

Sark has extensive head coach experience...not sure he should be lumped into the OC category, although that was his last job before current one.

Freeman was a hire from within after a coach left them unexpectedly and in good shape...not that there was a full blown coaching search for Notre Dame.

I think they really like Freeman and wanted continuity

in total 6 were Internal hires

Day, Freeman, Key, Moore, Whittingham and Silverfield

Sark and to some extent Kiffin have more winging roads as do Cig and Willie.

Agreed. He had 7 years of P5 head coaching experience before being hired by Texas.

I also don’t know if appearances in the first 12-team CFP should be the measuring stick. Does being the highest ranked G5 champ or the 2nd best team in the ACC really mean you’ve made it? If anything those guys are in the pool of target candidates rather than examples of sustained success at the highest level.

I would focus on the top half of the SEC and Big Ten and see how they hire their coaches...the top 25 will include a lot of schools whose hiring methods don't apply to the big schools.
