from his Michigan State staff. That raised red flags at the time. Of course, he goes on to assemble all star staffs. LSU invests in Football Operations and Academic Center. Success breeds success and lands amazing recruiting classes that helped Miles live the dream on Saban's back.

quote:

None of Saban’s assistants followed him from Michigan State, though he offered four of them jobs. He immediately put together an all-star staff that during his LSU years included future head coaches Jimbo Fisher (Florida State, Texas A&M), Will Muschamp (Florida, South Carolina), Kirby Smart (Georgia), Mel Tucker (Colorado), Derek Dooley (Tennessee), and Freddie Kitchens (Cleveland Browns).

All to say, the HC matters! But at least as much about what he can tangibly build around him, and I am not talking his X's and O's (Kiffin-esque). Much much more than that.

Who is that guy?

Aranda. He's smart, poised, & innovative. Something LSU hasn't had in a long time.

Saban had been in coaching for TWENTY FIVE years before he became the LSU HC. So for 25 years no one saw the greatest HC in college football just sitting there prime for the taking?

Or is it that Saban only became a great coach once he came to LSU? He found a place where the commitment to the program was boundless in a part of the country where the talent was endless. He then returned to Alabama where the same can be said about their commitment to the program and proximity to talent. So with those advantages in place he blossomed into the GOAT.

Point being, it is entirely possible that if LSU doesn't take a chance on Nick Saban he may have NEVER become the greatest HC...because he had NEVER had that kind of high level success in the 25 years before he was hired. That success at LSU directly led to him being in demand for a school like Alabama.

Les Miles and Ed Orgeron both won national championships at LSU. Neither had anything close to that same level of success before coming to LSU. So did they make LSU? Or did LSU make them?

So is the "next Saban" out there? Maybe. Because before LSU Saban was a guy who was thought of as a good coach who had mild success at other stops. It was when that guy got placed into the incubator at LSU that his success exploded. I would bet there are probably some other good coaches out there whose stature might explode with access to LSU's resources and level of commitment.

Folks, the pernt is he built foundation, all sides, and a nice roof on a program that generated success that parlayed into more success

He was not flashy, trendy with some crazy offense or G5 sitting on a unknown but future NFL HoF that drove his success. He built it to grow and sustain.

The only pernt on Saban comparison is to get past the HC headline flashy culture and see substantive characteristics of success in a HC.

I hope Woodward's war room has dissected the substance, not just the flashy BS.

Yeah, Bobby Williams followed Saban around for pretty much his entire career. He was never a very good coach, but apparently Saban liked him and Bobby had job security.

Didn’t Mel Tucker follow him to LSU?

Eta:

and then in 2000 followed Saban to Louisiana State University to fill the same position with the LSU Tigers.

Tough to follow him when you spent 1999 at Miami Ohio

Ah. I see.

But he still was an assistant under Saban at MSU and then came to LSU when saban was hired. Following him here, if you will.

LSU can build a GOAT though. The right hire could mean multiple titles for the next decade.

Bobby Williams did not follow Saban to LSU he became the head coach at Michigan State

Some times it better to not post and let people wonder than to post and remove all doubt
