When does Kirby get his hc gig?

I'm wondering if he goes straight for the HC gig, or if he goes the Muschamp route and proves himself as a lone DC first. It'll be interesting to see. I would think this year would be a great year for him to get an SEC HC gig:
Kentucky
Auburn
Arkansas
Tennessee
You also have to wonder about Gary Pinkel at Mizzou. I don't think he's going any where this year, but he's gonna finish 5-7 this season, his first losing season since 2004. If he doesn't have a winning record next year, he's going to be on the hot seat big time.

Dave Hart likes Kirby Smart, but Tennessee would have to miss out on a lot of guys to end up with him.

People whose opinions I trust are confident that Kirby Smart is ready. But you're right. This fan base couldn't handle a hire like this right now.

The problem is that you need to hire a coach and give him 5 years to build your program into what he wants. It is in shambles. Kiffin did horrible damage that Dooley attempted to fix. He lost the team eventually and you have no choice but to let him go.
Your new hire might take another 2 years to turn this program into his own. Then, you need to give him another 2-3 years to see if he can win with his style.
The Tennessee fan base might be able to handle a hire like Kirby Smart. But, he might be the best you can do. Throwing out $5 million doesn't guarantee a coach worth that money. Some times your options are limited, especially when you have 4 SEC teams looking for a head coach and several NFL teams.
For example, neither Nick Saban or Les Miles were the best coaches available when LSU hired them. But, they were the best we could get at the time for the money we were willing to pay.

Tennessee needs to hire a competent coach and we should see results quickly. It's not hard to improve on a train wreck.

I think 7-5 at best. Anything better than that is unrealistic. You have a brutal schedule next year with 3 games against potential top 5 teams on the road, and 2 top 10 teams in Georgia and South Carolina at home. I don't care who your coach is. You aren't winning those games. And, Auburn and Vandy are going to be tough also.
It's time to be realistic and give yourself 3 years to see any significant improvement.

I think Maryland, now that they are literally starting a new era in the Big Ten, should start by offering Smart their HC gig. PSU is on probation, VT is down, go out and recruit and try and create a Maryland footprint based on DC, Baltimore, NoVa, and southern PA. There should be enough talent there to make a good program.

Neither were great prior to LSU. And there were names thrown around with better resumes than each when they were hired. Both hires were decent, meh hires that have turned out great.

They would've been down this year anyway. They also don't really have the personnel along the lines to play week in/out in the SEC yet.
