When Les Miles was fired everyone in Baton Rouge talked about how special the job is and that every coach in America would be lining up to get the spot. Months later, LSU was left at the alter by several top candidates and ended up with O.

Fast forward a few years and the same thing happens with the coordinators search; LSU was going to get the best available, then ends up with two guys who seemed good on paper, but had zero experience and weren't exactly highly sought after by other teams.

I know the first difference is at AD. Woodward is obviously better than Alleva in every facet of the position, but was Alleva fully to blame for the failed HC search? Or are there other factors involved? Crime, academic budget cuts, pollution, weak economy, etc. Are the factors that motivate college graduates to move out of state contributing to a shallower pool of potential candidates? Even with the millions in pay, do young coaches have second thoughts about bringing their families here?

I honestly believe that these big targets like Franklin, Riley, and Fisher will simply use this as an opportunity for a pay raise, and LSU will be left reaching once again. This is why I feel like the second tier candidates like Napier, Aranda, or Fickell are your most likely hires.

Flame away.

I think if the hire is left to Scott, LSU will come away with a qualified and top notch HC. If Louisiana does Louisiana things and too many hands get in the cookie jar, that could frick it up.

But to break down you post further, you have to take each situation on it's own so to speak. The first time with Miles, Alleva bungled that thing from start to finish.

The coordinator search had a lot to do with people not wanting to work with or for Ed. Don't think Ed's consistent clashing with coordinators, even respected ones like Aranda doesn't get around in coaching circles.

You can't really blame Alleva for turning down Jimbo and Herman. You had to hire O to find out what was in the binder. How could you not?

We won't have that problem this time.

Easy. Woodward won’t get cold feet or bitch out at the last minute or cave in to fans or anyone else. He’ll hire who he thinks is the best fit for the job, and money won’t be a factor with him.

If Scotty allows himself to be pressured by higher ups to make the hire for him, then he’ll deserve having a reputation on par with Alleva. Woody needs to show some balls with this hire. You’re the athletic director. If this hire goes bad, it’s your head on the chopping block. Not Tate’s. Hopefully he takes that into consideration.

that's not really true. Alleva just threw a hissy fit because Herman wanted to hear Texas out.

I believe the difference was revealed in SW statement last night, "I really like O, but this is business". SW is all about the business side of his job, as he has proven, and his business is LSU AD. He will make the right choice and when he is done, that Championship Coach will want to be here.

Alleva admitted he didn't seriously pursue anybody but Herman, and that was just to appease higher-ups. He wanted Orgeron all along.

Yes, Alleva's incompetency was fully to blame for the last coaching search because there was no search. That's why now is different.
