$9.4M

quote:

It just didn’t make any sense, so many upset Trojans fans complained bitterly Wednesday at the news that Clay Helton would be back for the 2020 season. Why did USC do that? How could they do that? This just isn’t right. Clay has proved he’s not the right guy to make USC nationally competitive. Heck, he’s not even making USC competitive in the Pac-12. How did this happen? How did new AD Mike Bohn and relatively new Pres. Carol Folt not know this?

What’s going on around here? Maybe more than any of us could possibly have guessed based on the recounting of an emergency 11 a.m. conference call Wednesday that lasted more than two hours and, we understand, included Folt, Chairman of the USC Board of Trustees Rick Caruso, other board members and donors who have helped bankroll USC athletics. In order to protect this source, who wanted this version of the story known, we will only identify that person as someone who had first-hand knowledge of the discussion.

In the re-telling, the occasion for the call was to get everybody up to speed on just what was going down with a late surprise in the coaching announcement that was to come in little more than three hours. The group had heard that on Tuesday, Folt had told Bohn, who was not on the call, that he could not fire Clay Helton and the conference callers wanted to know exactly why.

According to this source, some of those on the call had been working on qualifying at least two high-profile coaches for the USC job. And for just one detail of their progress, the word was that they’d even come to an agreement on what it would take monetarily to get former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer to USC – a contract paying Urban $9.4 million a year. And with the donors on board, that would apparently not be a problem.

boosters were ready, AD was ready, but the president said frick no.

similarly to F. King, i think.

this comes from the USC247 war room, fwiw. dont really care that it's premium.

Folt doesn't have a concept of the shitstorm she's about to face. Unbelievable, yet sadly totally believable.

TLDR; USC has basically told their fans “frick you, we don’t care about football.”

It’s crazy when you remember they used to be a dynasty.

i dont know who i'd rather there, lincoln riley or urban. both would be extremely interesting though.

i could see Urban getting Dallas and then the Texans making a play for Lincoln to pair up with Watson after firing O'Brien for another average season.

That's not what it says. FBI notified them that they are not done with the "varsity blues" investigation. Both urban and stoops want to be able to hire and fire anyone involved with the program, including all staffers.

USC is scared to to let anyone go from the AD as they believe they may snitch (which is dumb, these people are not going to protect USC and risk jail time).

Once she gave that news, the rest of the admin got cold feet.

What's funny is they thought they could make a run at Ed O too, but the boosters pretty much laughed at them and told the admin they were delusional to think he would go there.

USC is going to end up having to pay out 1/2 billion from that law suit a couple years ago, prolly has another half dozen people that are currently working there that will end up in FBI custody and now has a huge fund raising problem. They will end up with atleast 25% of the suits not sold.

They are already way behind too because of swan on facilities and support staff. Swan didn't believe in that because they didn't have them when he played and it would possibly cut into his golfing time. They only have 2-3 non student support staff workers.

They are going to have to make wholesale changes if they want to compete with the top schools. Oregon is building the program similar to Alabama and is killing the PAC 10 in recruiting, just like last year. If things don't change USC is in for a long ride. They are 11th in recruiting in the conference this year.

Now that good 2018 class will help next year, but now that he is being retained and will prolly make it thru his 2023 contract he better get busy on the trail.

Also interesting to hear Harrell's offer from UT, 3 years 6.5 million. Crazy if he turns that down especially if it's guaranteed.

It's funny because the admin saw his lower salary and thought they could throw a big offer out and LSU wouldn't match lol.

Honestly sometimes I really wonder how some of these high level admin fall into the jobs. Bohn, the new USC ad, was an abjective failure at Colorado as AD. I really don't understand it. Kind of how the NFL used to be.

The high level admin jobs are even worse. They have zero concept of business and how a great sports program can transform a university.

It boggles my mind how schools don't look at Alabama and understand saban is a steal for what he has done, it's nuts.
